Son’s second bird
After catching up on some sleep Sunday after a 2:30am alarm clock Saturday morning, my son hit me with “when are we going turkey hunting again”. Well he doesn’t need to ask me twice, we set a plan in motion to go after a bird my dad saw strutting by himself Sunday morning while he was fishing. This morning came with high hopes that the bird would do the same thing he did the morning before. After no roost gobbling was heard, I spotted the bird just before 7:00 in strut as he crested a hill in the field abut 150 yards out. After making a few soft calls to him I could tell he finally saw the decoys when he broke strut and came at a full run from 100 yards out. As I was getting my son situated on the gun the bird ended up right in front of us and was face to face with the jake decoy. I asked if he had it on his head, and he said yea. I only had to tell him to shoot him once and the .410 did its job.
What started as a year to hopefully have my son get to see why I don’t miss a day during turkey season has turned into by far the best season I could imagine with him killing his second bird and watching him go though all the excitement.
