Stepping on Some Neck in Bluemont!
Well, I’ve had two close calls so far this season. Opening day had a bird just below the rise at 30 yds drumming for 30 mins. Never crested the hill and then just wandered off.
Yesterday had a bird fly down and land 25 yds away w two hens. They landed in thick cover and then worked their way off never giving me a shot.
Well, today was my turn. Windy up on the mountain (8-10 mph w 20 mph gusts).
Nothing gobbling before fly down, but heard some birds down the side of the mountain around 0630. Worked around above them and gave a few yelps and they hammered back. Ten minutes later a hen comes through and as soon as she was out of sight I could hear the leave’s crunch as two gobblers came behind her.
Saw the beard on the first bird and rose up just a touch to clear a fallen tree and he sees my move and periscopes.
Too late.
Nice bird 10” beard, 17.5#, and 1” ivory spurs
Used my new phone mount I posted about earlier.
Love it.
