Been a lot of years since I was back there but I like to keep up on the hunting and other things in the area as much as possible. Mostly been wondering what the turkey and deer situation is like there now?

I've been hunting the National Forrest in Craig for a couple of years now. There are plenty of turkeys and deer along with bear and coyotes and don't forget squirrels. :) I havn't deer hunted there but do see alot of deer and sign while turkey, grouse, squirrel, yote hunting. It's a beautiful county with some great hunting... Scott

I've been hunting in the National Forest in Craig County for the better part of the last 15 years. I've seen hunting pressure decrease in the areas that I hunt, mainly because the deer population has stabilized. I usually see deer on every outing. Haven't managed to kill a wall hanger there yet, but the sign definately indicates they are there. Killed a turkey the last two consecutive years there in the spring. If you're going to be successfull in the National Forest in Craig, you've got to put in your scouting time. Definately a greater challenge to hunt National Forest game than that on private land.

I just thought I would add that I hunted the National Forest for several years and I don't believe that it is harder hunting than some private land. Pressured birds are pressured birds public or private! Private land is usually smaller so you can't go find the unpressured bird like on National Forest land. Giving the National Forest land an advantage!

Ryan, I agree. It's just been my experience that the game on the national forest spooks easier due to the pressure than the game I've encounterd on private land. I REALLY enjoy hunting the national forest for the very reason you state, basically unlimited opportunity. Hunting a piece of private land that sees no hunting pressure is the same as hunting a piece of National Forest land that see no hunting pressure. You've just got to travel further away from roads on National Forest to find that land.
