What time of the day do the birds leave and go to the roost this time of the year? Been out evenings looking in fields but haven't seen anything. Was wondering if I am out too late if I am out at 6 pm?

PG,

As a general rule turkeys usually fly down when it gets light enough to see clearly. Sometimes fog will keep them in the trees longer in the mornings. They usually go to roost when they can not tell the bushes from the bobcats or if a bad storm comes in they have been known to go to roost several hours early.

Since Amy watches all ofthe roosting activity form her front porch I would not argue with her. I have seen turkeys fly up in to treess whenever they sense danger, so they can go to trees even in the daylight. I have seen birds in pastures in years past up to 30 minutes before dark.

I have seen/heard them head towards the roost site about 45-60 minutes before dusk. The gobblers will usually gobble once or twice on there way in and then a couple of times after they fly up for the night. Mark the spot and then be there early the next morning.

I agree with y'all but, I have also had a gobbler in the fall get off the ground ten yards in front of me when it was pitch black!! I was walking out down a road to pick up a hunting buddy when this happened. I nearly jumbed out of my skin, my buddy said the bird had been walking around him for the past hour and a half, he just would not come in close enough to shoot.
