Hey ya'll how's it been going? My buddy called me this morning around seven, saying the DNR caught a bear over at the cabin we hunt at some. Come to find out, the bear (or bears) have almost totally destroyed his cabin ( knocking logs out and making a real mess of things). The DNR hauled a bear trap in and caught her Tues. sometime. She was a 200 lb sow. The guys from the DNR told the owner there were probably more around since this is breeding season. Geesh, may have to take my father-in-law camping.
Seems to me there are alot more braver or hungrier bears anymore. I was talking with a guy the other day that works for the park service and he said he's seen more bear in the past six years than ever. Pretty wierd huh?

The overall southern appalchian bear population has increased pretty steadily recently. The law enforcement pressure on poachers and sale/trafficing of illicit bear parts has helped some in this regard. Bears are being live-trapped and released in new habitat on a regular basis and this is to some extent responsible for the bears showing up in places where they have not been before.A live -trapped bear frequently has a homeing instinct to go back where it came from and many tagged /tatooed for permanent ID show up back where they were originally trapped. The trips they take can cover hundreds of miles and obviously they have to eat on the way and thus they freqently have contacts with humans where they have not been seen before as a species(in our lifetime anyway). I do some things for a foundation that funds much of the bear research in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and that is the motherload of bears and their habitat in the southern appalachians.
