Guys check out ESPN.com outdoors hunting section. There's an article by Dr. James Earl Kennamer of the NWTF regarding when spring hunting seasons start and how the various wildlife agencys determine seasons.

ESPN is not allowed on TV sets or computers in Tennessee anymore(with good reason) so you will have to summarize the article for the Tennessee delegation, if you would?

Most orange-blooded people in Tennessee have not recovered from ESPN taking the Heisman trophy away from the sainted Peyton MAnning....plus ESPN got so mad about the outrageuous letters and hate mail they got over the aformentioned debacle that they have refused to bring the GAme DAy crew back to Tenn because they say it is not "safe " for them here(probably a correct analysis) ...so most down here just took ESPN off the channel box...hhahhahah

GN: Maybe you can get a sportswriter from Alabama to convince ESPN everything in TN is by the books? I'm certain he and Tee Martin could persuade them to come back somehow....$$$$$ oops...fingers went astray ;)

Sorry GN, couldn't resist.

Somebody showed me the NWTF piece...can some of you VA folks explain htis statement 's factual basis for me, as quoted from the article:" the illegal kill of hens accounted for 34 percent of all the spring mortality of hens in Virginia" , as I wonder what actual study demonstrated the factual basis for this statement ..if that is true, it means you got a poaching problem beyond the envelope it seems to me. Sincethere is no specific study quoted to support the statemnt in the article I just wondered where ithe basis for that came from? Doesthat mean hens shot afte thefall season by deer hunters or what(?) or does it mean poached hens by people actually setting out to kill a hen..that is really an alarming statement to me, if it is accurate?

GN - I agree it is alarming, in that the author says "illegally or inadvertantly harvested". So by definition of harvest ( the locating and gathering of a crop) he's saying these hens are shot and taken home for dinner ??? Another statement is "hens are with gobblers and frequently accompany them when they respond to hunters' calls" so he's saying there are people ( I hesitate to call them hunters ) out there that are calling in gobblers and shooting the hens that come with them for dinner. This happens to 34 out of every 100 hens to die in the spring ???
If thats the case, with the bizillion hunters we have here in PA, that 34 % must be a lot higher...

I think this came from a study from West Virginia and Virginia a couple years ago. The studdy electronically tagged about 50 or so turkeys a peice. From that study only 11% were harvested legally!!!!! 34% illegally, I can remember the others for predation and such.

So yea, its a REAL problem.
