wE HAVE BEEN ASKED FOR AWARDS CLARIFICATION ---you do not have to be a resident of the state to win that state's Merit award...second, we do not reimburse for gas money for out of state trips to search for poults. Third, Due to popular demand, we have added a women's division, and also a children's division for all entrants under the age of 16(plus Freddy)....Fourth, also added an "others" division for those who do not think they properly fall in to any of the aforemnetioned categories; the "others" awards can be awarded confidentially if the winner prefers...but you will need to identify yourself as Other 1, Other 2, Other 3 when you enter...so we will know who you might be etc. Fifth,A senior division for all over age 54. Sixth, a best poult photo is also to be awarded to one entrant overall, not by state(BUT, the entrant must post the photo without Freddy's help...thus, we will have no entrants nor a winner, as no one can post without Freddy's help.) The Awards committee is willing to consider other rules modifications, but not many.

We have been asked to define "Honor System." There seems to be some concern about the board posters understanding of this concept that has arisen after considering the various measurement discrepancies that were rather obvious in the recent turkey contest among the brethren and the sistren. Honor System means "truth". This concept may be difficult for the posters, as a species. It is a commmon saying among turkey hunters "that only the turkey knows the truth about how he died." This is akin to the concept that you are to report what you see acurately, without embellishment or hyperbole and without adding inches, pounds, numbers or distance to the report. And his what you really saw, not what you think you might have seen, heard, or otherwise sensed.

Is there any entry category for a poult SLAM? I mean if I see poults in four states do I get some kind of certificate from you or from NWTF? Do the the SLAM entries have to be of each species or can they just be from ,say, four states? I wnat to know the rules before I start driving.
Rules Committee
Posted on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 12:13 pm:

The Rules Committee cannot speak to the intentions of NWTF as far as a Poult Slam. We will award from Vaturkey A Hillbilly Poult Slam legion of merit award to anybody who sights poults in four states south of (but including) maryland. A Yankee Poult Slam for four states above MAryland. And a mixed bag Slam for any combinations thereof. There has been an additional question raised about whether you can claim the poult as fairly sighted if you sight it from within a car or vehicle or whether you have to get outside the car/truck in orderto claim the sighting. We have decided to allow vehicles (excluding four wheelers) to be used for this contest, so you can be truthful about whether you were in the car or not or whether the motor was on or off or whether you had to honk the horn tomake the poults run in order to see them.

tHE rULES cOMMITTEE HAS REJECTED A REQUEST FOR A SEPERATE CLASSIFCATION FOR PUBLIC LAND POULTS AWARDS AS OPPOSED TO PRIVATE LAND POULT AWARDS....A POULT IS A POULT, WE DECIDED. ALSO THERE ARE NO DOUBLES AWARDS. AND YOU CAN ONLY CLAIM ONE SLAM A WEEKEND IF YOU DRIVE I FOUR STATES,BUT YOU CAN CLAIM MULTIPLE SLAMS FOR THE ENTIRE SUMMER/FALL ON DIFFERNET WEEKENDS. BUT THE SAME POULTS CANNOT BE CLAIMED BY DIFFERENT DRIVERS/PASSENGERS IN THE SAME VEHICLE FOR PURPOSES OF A SLAM. YOU GUYS ARE ASKING AL OT OF GOOD QUESTIONS THOUGH.

Question for Rules Committee????>....

Dear Sirs:..... Do the contestants receive bonus points for poults which respond to calls with peep sounds?.....is there a mulipier to be used if the contestant completes his slam while drinking ice tea & eating homemade ice cream while driving down old dirt roads listening to Merle Haggard?.....Committie please advise with these calarifications asap... As I have made an appointment with mechanic to get Hody's truck horn fixed.

If I by chance see a poult and it is a different color do I get a special award for a non-typical and if so would this in turn make some one jealous because I have a non-typical poult. What if the poult are tame but look like wild birds ( which they do)? :)

Jon

Posted on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 2:25 pm:

Now... technically a poult is "a young fowl, especially a turkey, chicken, or pheasant." I have seen some chicken poults this year... but I guess they don't count? Should we require temporary capture and DNA testing to ensure the validity of the claim? This honor system thing could really give some people trouble...

We've been meeting all afternoon on one of these questions you fellas have raised. I won't bore you with the details but the bottom line is that there are no bonus points for any kind of extracirricular activities while poult sightings are being made or attempted ; no bonus bonus points for any color other than regular poult brown; and to besure we are comparing apples to apples, your poult must have a hen with it (in order to avoid non-turkey mistakes IF the sighting occurs before Sept 1. Hope this clears up your questions.

I saw 8 poult this afternoon, They were all together in the nest they were brown as you stated and they did have a hen for a while. They were not hatched yet is this a winner. The tractor was cutting hay and flushed the hen I hope she comes back if not what should I do leave them of try to raise them in a incubator?

Posted on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 7:16 am:

Would JON's tractor sighting be disqualified? Earlier Committee rulings ruled out 4 wheeler sightings. I'd like to get my entry in now. I saw a poult on the last day of season. It was laying in it's half opened egg home thanks to some varmit. It had a few feathers, but was not able to peep as I nearly stepped on it in the middle of the logging road. Oh course, it didn't realize I had found it as it just laid there in it's shell not yet awake. I called out to the varmit, hoping he or she would show it's desperate face, but the coward was a no show. I left the poult to return to the salt of the earth. God Bless.

Dead poult do not count. Unhatched eggs do not count. Dale, sorry about your expeirence with the varmit. Now listen boys, if you guys keep tryin' to stretch rules here we are gonna have a problem with Mossberg 835 who would have won the Vaturkey.com board Big Turkey Contest , just concluded, instead of Max, but he was hung up by a rules viloation...(his turkey was bigger but he did not register properly)(plus you got all the out of staters who killed bigger turkey s too complaining about the discrimination agst their birds etc) and we do not need another inquiry here about rules violations ,so let's just leavethe rules expansion alone here and try to play within the white lines....now go find some legimate live poults and claim some awards here .

As to supposed legal violations, if you will state your issues of your claim we can respond. You will probably win and Freddy can give your the Board as dmamges. After much discussion with my legal counsel I will be filing a motion to be granted a hearing based on the Following...

#1) The Rules Committee did not file for a permit to promote and/or conduct a contest with the Commonwealth of Virginia... Cost of which is $125.00

#2) Based on current VA codes it is illegal to conduct any type of activies while operating a motor vehicle which distract the driver from safe operation of the vehicle......Cant drive & look for poults as sugested by the Rules Committee

#3) It is aganist the civil rights of an individual to refuse them furthered rewards for activities acomplished while listening to Merle Haggard.

#4) It is a violation of the Wild Turkey Hens rights to say she must be seen with her poults....What if the Hen has placed her poults up for adoption?.......Foster Care( ex. a snake in the nest).... or the like. Thus the poult accompanied by a Hen rule by the Rules Committee is a direct violation of the Hens rights.

Case is slated for June 8th in a Ronaoke Co court ...trial by jury!

Judge Amy McGuire will be setting on the bench..

If a representative of the Rules Committee can not be present then a written defense may be persented by legal counsel.

Knight Va- (and counsel Hody)Those are all very good points and your fervor in stating them suggests maybe we better just hold up on all contest awards for all current/past vaturkey.com board awards (BigTurkey) and so forth until all of this is cleared up. The Board might be better served by auctioning that beard board from Maytom anyway rather than giving it away. Historically, the guy that set up the contest has run the rules for it,as per Hody on the recent turkey contest. Somebody has to make the rules , right? If you do not like the contest or the rules , or don't want to get a Legion of Merit or triple grand poult slam, then don't enter, but please don't threaten the rules committee. Now the out of staters did not whine about being excluded from the big turkey contest , threaten disruptive and costly litigation or threaten folks to have to show up in a foreign state to defend themselves. Or you can just drop your charges and apologize and we will go ahead with the big turkey awards as planned and let the little ol poult contest go ahead as planned ...your choice? hehehheh(p/s-I think the Rules Committee would be happy with your choice of a judge though)...

He is absolutely determined to win that Children's Division and will do whatever it takes to come out on top....somebody has to ride herd on this thing. He has the advantage of being the only one able to post pictures on his board so we really need some oversight here...I am sure you will see the wisdom in these statements if you just reflect on them for a minute or two....Rules Committee

We will really have to get this ironed out at the cookout next Saturday. I will try to get some pics of a real poult this weekend so that all of you can see what they are supposed to look like. I am saddened by all of the events that have led up to this lawsuit. It is fairly apparent that you all need jobs that require more work..LOL Have a great weekend looking for poults!!!! To The Rules Committee:

Dear sirs,

In your last letter you used the word threaten in describing my case against the poult slam... I fear maybe you have misunderstood my intentions. I am not threatening, I seek only justice and fair play... In consideration of all involved, and now realizing due to a single entry involving a pic that was tampered with, the need for the very real and hard job of the rules committee I have am willing to drop all charges save one.... The charge of the violation of the parent Hen's rights must be addressed in the future at some date. This is America, land of the free home of the brave. If the Hen must be present with her poults then where is the Father (gobbler) that inpregnated Her? Should he not be held liabable for his actions? I have been advised by counsel to postpone this charge until after the annual Big Turkey Contest awards have been concluded. It is with great regret towards Merle that I drop the rest of the charges.....the committee used the example of the altered picture very well in it's letter, thus causing me to for the moment not pursue my charges.

The Rules Committee accepts the proffered settlement response as final disposition of all matters concerning complaints about the RULES for the Poult Contest. P/SMax, there may be room for you on the Rules Committee if an opening happens along. Stay flexible. You obviously can spot a good deal when one comes along. Freddy, we may have to ceate a special category for you to compete in...how about a "McGuire" category so it would just be you and AMy....that should be really interesting(assuming your brother does not get in this)...on the other hand you are in the Children's Category now, and that may be more comptetition than you want as the youngsters may be , in fact, fully capable of posting pictures on this board without Freddy's help, so therefore, they may be able to compete with him here ...hmmmmmm, this placement of Freddy in the contest is still under advisement.

Mr/Ms/Other 4 ever--"slammin poults"? We are not fast readers on the Committee but tell us where that phrase has appeared in the prior dialogue among all these folks ,if you would? Thnaks. In fact, if you will refer to the 9:34 am post today by the Rules Committee you would see that in fact, dead poults are not allowed in the contest. This contest is open to anyone who "sees" a live poult. About as nature friendly as you can get.(p/s-you folks are going to have to establish some kind of retirmenet fund for the Rules Committee if you keep taking up all out time asking all these questions about rules, and threatening people and so on.)

I'm telling you folks, rules committee, honorable witnesses, members of the jury: if the facenet fits, you must acquit. If them's wild poults, we must revolt. If Freddy gets the merit, I don't wanna hare it. If Fred's hunting grounds are that blessed, I must protest. Freddy's wild poults make me snicker...the boys back in the liquor. Thars never been such a wild litter, ole Fred's fulla flitter. Such a dense wild flock, why it's surely poppy cock. Wild birds don't grow like taters, unless Fred's a baiter! Mr. McGuire I know with my legal background I can certianly prove both slander and malice in reference to you by Mr.Tp in said letter. I will call in me team out lawyers and review the facts once again, but I am certian any court of law in this state would deliver a ruling in a civil trial on ur behalf.I beleive that certian facts will come to light on June 8th in Roanoke VA which may strength your already almost flawless case.I have cotacted experts from VA Tech. to verify that the pic in question was not taken at their testing houses. I have also located the hen in question and she is will to give expert testiomy that in fact those poults are hers. She is willing to have DNA testing done if the need arises. Me and the rest of Rules Committee had to take the weekend off to pick up enough cans on Interstate 75 to feed the kids this week, as they have laid my wife off down at the sawmill and with one arm she can't get no work setting tobbcco. Anyway, did not have enough time to keep up with all the lawyer-talk and so forth. Jon has a winning entry and is line for the Legion of Merit award as soon as we figure out the shipping and handling charges on it. Freddy'
s (entry in the Children's Division) is under inquiry I reckon although I do not know what it would hurt to give him an Award as he obviously wants one pretty bad...those turkeys are pretty slippery though...you notice that that hen of freddy's in hte entry picture is so slippery she does not even have a reflection in the mirror five feet away from her? Now a poster named roadkill has referred to one of the elder statesman of the Vaturkey community as "gobbleboy" and I guess the rest of you are gonna take that sitting down? The rules Committe has noted the insult and make take some action here as soon as it finishes up sorting these cans out.

Congratulations to the keen-eyed spotters. Biologists in Tenn say it takes more than four poults to sustain the population at current levels and the population will expand in an area if theer are more than four poults from a clutch that survive. This is to verify Freddy's post earlier of the hen and little ones. I did see them this morning out in the fields near to the house. (I did not see them last night, as I was playing softball.) But the hens and their babies are as real as can be! :)

This morning I did not see any poults, but I did see a hen and a big strutter up the road from my home. He was all puffed up and pretty. How long do they breed? They were at a distance so there may have been poults, but I did not see them...
If she did not have some she might soon.LOL :)

Because there has been so much discussion about the rules and so forth, the awards committee wants to resate a simple rule: if you see some poults with a hen , and report it here on the board then you will get some kind of Award of Merit , even if it is not the first in the state....or even if you do not qualify for a slam etc....technically, Jon is the first poult brood winner in Va, and Freddy has won the Children's Division in Va, but we have al ot of other states to claim and since there is so much confusion, every entry (of a turkey poult sighting) which complies with the hen , first hand, and no four-wheeler rules will be elgible to get in the drawing for the item of personal property at the end. Surely -hopefully- there are more than two broods in Va and elsewhere?

And Amy has won the women's division for Va I guess....now I do not know which one of the McGuires has won the McGuire division but we will let them sort that out.

GN: Does it take four poults to sustain the population or expand it? Also, is it safe to assume that is a constant? For instance, if the population is way down (fewer hens), will 4 poults per brood still sustain (or expand)? It would seem the only way that could happen is if a greater percentage of hens successfully nest during low population years. Is that the case?

Most living things in the natural world operate in a density dependent (carrying capacity) fashion. Example -- thin oak trees and they produce more mast more consistently, etc. etc. Does the TN biologist think turkeys do the same...when the flock is down more hens nest? Also, what do you think?

TP- don't think you can make up to me so fast after those Tee MArtin cracks(he ain't done nuthin)(....you're still on probation and I mean real probation, like Clemson probation, and not quasi -probation, ON-AGAIN,OFF-AGAIN like Lou Holtz doles out to key running backs);>)...anyway, back to turkeys: I do not know about turkey populations (and have proved it by saying fall hunting of birds wasnota smartthing to do andthe population appears to just keep growng) and was only trying to accurtately repeat what I thought the biologist says...I'll ask agaIN IF i CAN FIND HIM. i SUSPECT YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS...WHAT IS YOUR THEORY?

Okay-TP has caught me in a lie(sort of)...in a state TWRA hunting brochure for turkeys , the Tenn poult survey summaries for the last several years are included,as is a little text with it which says:"It takes a poult per hen ratio of 2.7 in August just to maintain a stable wild turkey population ..." It alsos says as to last year:"the August poult per hen ratio of 4.0 indicates good poult poulation and survival which has resulted in a good increase in the wild turkey population statewide." In the 22 years shown by the survy there have only been four years where th P/P/Hen -august was less than 4.0. Now the average brood sizes (what we would be seeing now)are also described for each of the 22 years and the average brood size is 6.4 for the period, with the smallest yearly brood size being 5.7 ; and in only three of the 22 years was it less than 6.0. The brochure says the august portion is the critical piece because mortality drop s to about zero after they reachthree months of age....gues they do not know abotu the 34% hen kill the NWTF has assigned to Va hens in the off season? The density issues raised by TP are not addressed in the statwide context..I know there are more turkeys in Tenn than a show dog could jump over though...and in Va Ky and every where else in Appalchia as well it seems to me. We may have a pop quiz on some of this so pay attention.

GN, Do I detect a hint of anger? I think it's great how folks are so passionate about sports in the south. I am also very passionate about college football, but I'll not feed you fodder by naming my team ;>)... Notice I am coy enough not to divulge my rooting interests to you on grounds it may incriminate me, but I am chuckling at your fishing expedition -- first Clemson, then Lou Holtz. Maybe I pull for the Trojans, no the Buckeyes, nope...Bulldawgs...hmmm, Gators or could it be Hokies?

Serious GN, I'm just jankin' your chain. The Vols are an incredible team and the fan support is just unreal. Man that stadium is rockin with 100K+...now that's college football! It's hard to keep over zealous alumni in line in such successful programs as TN. I clown around a lot. Don't take me too seriously.

Turkeys...I really didn't know the answer. All I ever hear down this way is "good hatch or not so good" based on the brood surveys. The forecasts are always very well correlated with my hunting experience, but they never are so specific as to mention numbers. The number thing you quote from TN is very interesting. I hope the quiz is open book, or at least multiple choice.

Who does Freddy root for? Next time I'll use his team in my poetic piddlin... but until then....

Once 2 strangers climbed ol Rocky Top listenin' for a gobblers shrill...strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top, reckon they never will...corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top, dirt's too rocky by far...that's why ol Gobblenow hunts way down low, shooten' em from his car. Once GN had a girl on Rocky Top, half bear the other half cat... GN shot so many longbeards, the poor gal finally got fat. Rocky Top you'll always be turkey pickin home fer me, good ol Rocky Top, Rocky Top TN....Rocky Top Tennneeeeeesssseeeeee. Go Vols...sickem Blue! The fight song is even better'n the stadium.

Hey saw another flock of poults this time about a mile of so from my house they looked about one and a half weeks old. It was a mamma and 8 little ones comming from a field across the road. They looked funny trying to get up a small bank falling and such. The mamma putted and they all took off not like the others I saw who just froze. I guess each mamma bird is different. The time was around 7:30 p.m. on friday afternoon.

Jon I am disppointed that the distinguished posters and lurkers on this board are either are not seeing them or are not bothering to report except for you, Freddy and AMy....maybe the only poults in the appapalchians are yours and the McGuire's?????I doubt it....

Awards: What did you expect? Mcguire has all of the poults in the Appalachians in his flock. Didn't you see the photo? Since Maguire is hoarding such a healthy flock, I think the Turkey Federation and Game Dept. needs to trap birds on Maguire's farm and relocate across the Appalachians! Give us back our birds Freddy. haha Fred..Just kidding.

Hey I saw some poults crossing the road with their mom on Sunday June 9th when returning home from Blacksburg VA. We came across Catawba Rd to Blacksburg Rd and came out at the Homeplace Restaurant. It was a beautiful sight. Couldn't get a good count since they went everywhere when we came around the curve and they were in the middle of the road. Thank goodness we didn't hit any of them.

Does this beat Amy in the Women's Division?!?! LOL!

Luki Ladi-the Awards Committee has been considering your poult repost It is noteworthy that Amy saw her poults some days before the June 9 th date you have identified as the date on which you saw your poults. Unless you think Amy is in the McGuire Division and therefore not elgible for the Women's Division awards, it would seem AMy has beat you on an earlier sighting date . But we are willing to consider your views if there is something else we should be considering? Heck, weare trying to give out awards here, not hoard them.
