The first bird I took this year had what appeared to be a second set of spurs on each leg. They are growing out of the base of the "first" set. One is about 1/4" and the other is about 1/8". The main spurs are 1 inch.

Do these count in the score? Or do they have to grow on the leg totally separate from the main spurs? Or does it matter where they grow?

This is the first bird I've killed with this phenomenon & I'm unsure. I didn't count this growth in my "score" for the contest (wouldn't have mattered anyway!).

Also, this is the 3rd bird in 2 years from the same property with ivory spurs as opposed to black spurs. How prevalant are ivory colored spurs?

OK, I looked at them again and the second spurs are growing beside and touching the base of the "main" spurs.

Many(half?) ofthe mtn birds I see have what I call ivory spurs(ehich ususally means a dark 1/8 inch piece at the tip and the bases , but ivory in the main middle portion of the spurs...I haveseen some whith pure ivory , no dark or black , but they are rare.

If you look at the NWTF scoring they recognize birds with double spurs. I am not sure though if they are seperate or attached to the main spur. as far as I know it counts with the score though. Anyone know if the spur must be totally seperate to count?? GN , Freddy ??? I would like to see a pics if you have one though.

I've taken a couple of pics - yet to be developed. We'll see if they turn out. If not, I'll bring them to the cookout if I can make it.

Ivory spurs are not that uncommon.
