I hunted the first 5 days of the NY season with my son in Otsego County, right out his front door we shock gobble a bird on the roost the first day, we pull this bird over a beaver pond and a dirt road to within 30 yards of me. I swear to god I never saw that small tree I shot that was in front of that bird, miss # 1 for the year. The second day we hear several birds gobbling and we drive around and come in behind them, we have hen talk and gobbling with the hens taking the gobbler away. All of a sudden I hear running in the leaves then quite for about 5 minutes, then gobb gobb gobble gobble gobble, I look at my son and ask if he thinks the birds are hot. As I look back here comes 4 good size jakes with one strutting I raise my gun to shoot one and tell my son I can't see, dumb me forgot to take off the lens caps on the scope, goodbye birds as I try to remove them. I had to work Sunday night and went out after work to state forest here in CT, getting there about 8:10, it takes me 10 minutes to change into my hunting clothes and I step behing the parking area and blow a crow call, with a gobble coming back at me, I head down to the end of the field and call on a glass friction call and the bird hammers back. I walk over the the edge of the woods and give another call to pinpoint the bird and he gobbles back at about 60 yards, I duck behind a bush and here he is coming thru an opening, as he goes behind a bush I get the gun up and let him have it when he gets to the other side. My best bird ever, 22 pounds, 9 1/2 inch heavy beard and 1 3/8 spurs, another gobbler that I didn't see flew away at the shot. Today at the same location two weeks into the season I heard 6 different birds gobbling.
