I think our season is almost done in Southside Va. Birds have quieted down in the past week (may have something to do with so many being killed the first and second weeks). My hunting partner killed one Monday, but we haven't done a thing since then. Is anyone else hearing birds? Give me a little hope so that I will keep getting up in the morning to go!

Gotta agree with you Knight. Haven't heard any thing in well over a week. I went out this morning for one more try and not a peep. Tried Freddy's strategy. put out a deke, did fly downs, light purrs and clucks every 5-10 minutes and sat for well over an hour. All I did was give the gnats somethin to chew on. Let 'er sing. Bow season is less than 5 months away!

Well boys... it ain't quite over... heard 4 different birds gobbling this AM... I know for a fact that 3 of the 4 had hens with them! (We saw 2 longbeards with 2 hens and heard hens with another gobbler) As usual for this year, they shut-up when they hit the ground... I think the fact that gobblers have hens all season is something we are going to have to get used to...

Heard three single gobbles at dawn, then had one gobble twice at my calls around 7:15 and 7:30 but it was over after that. Had a grouse strut by me at about 15 feet. Eaten alive by gnats.

Heard 5 birds gobble from roost this am. Got above three that were close together. Hens were right with them so, of course, they hit the ground and go the other way. I make a really big cirlce down the ridge to the bottom and begin still hunting to where I think they are headed. I hear scratching up on the ridge at 150 yds. I freeze. I am completely unable to call due to my exposure so I watch them. It was two LONGbeards and a jake. They made their way up and over the ridge. I high-tail it above them about 300 yds. Setup, scratch some and cluck sparingly for an hour. Nothing! No clue where they went.

Any advice is welcome as I am going back there tomorrow. They may have been following a hen. I could not confirm seeing her though because of the leaves. They crossed into a known nesting area so she may have been leading them.

I would set up close to the roost area in the direction they went today. Call soft(if at all) and scratch the leaves after flydown. Also maybe do a flydown with no calling. They should go the same way and come right to you, but then again maybe not it is turkey hunting after all. If you have any dekes put them out in an open area too. Just a suggestion, but they will more than likely do the same thing tomorrow unless they were spooked.

With the wind howling and rain pouring, I made the decision to set up in the bottom below the three birds. Just finished setting up blind and decoys at 5:50 am and was settling in when I get busted!! I thought they would stay put a little longer than that. Apparently, they pitched off or were blown off the roost early and made a bee line to the protection of the creek bottom. Waited it out any way.

Great season nonetheless and congratulations to everyone!
