Is there a surefire way to tell the difference between the way a jake gobbles vs a longbeard's gobble? Is it mainly a "pitch" thing?

Yes, I think so. Seems to me that a mature bird being 3+ years, has a deeper, gutteral sounding gobble. Sometimes even jakes can fool you in thinking it's a mature bird!! I wouldn't bet the ranch on guessing who's who though!!!

I have been fooled a lot. I think generally the jakes gobbles are shorter in length and do not have the "hollow" sound to them that the older birds get. Often it seems, if you hear a gobble and then sort of a second "chime in gobble" (shorter in duration than the lead gobble )from another bird right with the frist one, the second bird is a jake . I am one who thinks the subordiante birds and the jakes tend to be right on top ofthe high ridges in ppallachia frequently and away from some of the prime breeding/strutimg areas lower around fields etc. Off the top of my head, I have not seen a jake in the woods this spring in the eastern US....hard to believe but Ithink that is right...but I did hear some birds on the first weekend in TennI thought were jakes gobbling.

Not sure if you've seen any of his tapes or heard of him, but Kenny Morgan does a good job of explaining and detailing gobbling birds in my opinion. Of course some jakes have that broken gobble, but some can produce a full gobble that seems to be short in length as GN stated. Satellite birds (subordinate) do have that gutteral/hollow sound. The big boys, 5-6 year olds, have a different gobble in Kenny's opinion. He claims those birds have a real clear gobble. Says it sounds like putting marbles or rocks in a can and shaking it along with the typical sound of a gobble, but crisp. Hard for me to explain, it's been a while since I've seen the tape. I tend to listen to any man that has 500+ turks under his belt!

Here's Kenny's site. Not plugging, but man does he have an awesome clucking and purring call....The Friction Wood.

I know I am not the best, but this year I have been fooled more than usual. Its seems the places I hunt this year have more Jakes gobbling and looking for hens! I wonder why. Someone may have gotten the old bird before I got there.

What have you seen?
