After 9 consecutive days of Hunting in New Jersey, the Turkey Gods have smiled upon me.I've dealt with rain, wind, cold temps, and multiple trespassers on my mountain (AKA turkey heaven). I roosted a bird last night that Gobbled 20+ times until pitch black. I figured he was alone and would be ripe for this morning. A Perfect situation.
I woke this morning at 3:30 to the sound of rain drops on my window. !@#$%+(&! I said to myself. I must have done something to upset the Gods. At 5:15 I was setting up where I believed to be about 150 yards from the bird. As the rain got heavier, my hopes and spirit were becoming saturated.
At 5:40, He announced his presence to the world. He continued on from the roost with about 25 more cries of lonliness. After some low key love talk, he was on the ground and as quiet as my footsteps on the soaked forest floor. !*&^@+!~
I thought to myself. Five minutes later(seemed like 5 hours) he started up again. Now he's about 100yds out, I can't breathe because my heart is in my throat, and I'm wishing that I spent just a little more time in the bathroom this morning.
He gobbled 40 more times as he closed in to about 45 yards. It's raining so hard now that a 45 yds, I'm not sure if Im looking at him or an old rotten tree stump. A few more sweet clucks and purrs, and the old boy was strutting at 27yds.
One sharp put brought his head up. I don't remember to much after that point. When I regained human consciousness, He was on my shoulder and I was walking back to my truck with a smile on my face that only a turkey hunter would know. 23 pounds, 10 1/2 inch beard, and 1 1/8 inch spurs. Thank-God!!!
Sorry the post is so long, but I'm a little excited right now. Almost forgot, I took him at 6:10am. Not a bad way to start the day.

That is a good bird....the elation from this one will start to wear off right after the next one hits the dirt.

Sounds like an excellent way to start the day! Where are you hunting in N. J. I didn't know our turkeys got that heavy ( because they don't live long enough). I hunt zones 15 & 16 in the South.
