I want to know about the area around New Castle...
A friend has a 900 acre family farm he just got permission to hunt. The two little old aunts haven't let anyone on it except the farmer who plants it for a while... It backs up to the national forest there...
Do you think there would be any Bears around there? I know there are Deer...
Thanks, Clifford

Clifford... I will bet you the place has bear. It is some beautiful country...

Scott can probably give you some more info about that area... he's not too far from there...

It would definately be worth a trip up to hunt it...

Clifford. I live in Salem, Va. which is about 30 minutes from New Castle. The surronding area is Craig County. I have deer hunted there a few times and I work with several guys who live there and hunt bear. Craig has a good bear population and good hunting for all big game. If you have permission to hunt a large farm like that, I recommend you scout it and hunt it. Just outside of New Castle is a local store called the Hunters Den. The name of the lady that owns it is Ellen Horn. I'm sure she would give you some good info about the area if you dropped in.

Cliff,
What's up :) That was one of the places I was going to suggest to ya' on VADeer. I have seen several bear in Craig Co. while turkey hunting and predator hunting. Have also seen a good bit of sign. I hunt about 10 miles south of New Castle but Craig County as a whole has a pretty good bear population. Most of the hunting in Craig though is done by dogs and pickups... so if you got out in the woods a ways or a nice piece of property like you mentioned you should do pretty good. GG had a good idea by stopping in and seeing Ellen... she should be able to give you some good info. Scott

Thanks guys... My never ending pursuit of a bruin has led me all over the place.
And, of course, the internet has made the search a lot easier. Now, all I've got to do is find some time... I had some once, but I seem to have lost it...

Hey Clifford,

I made a post about 3 weeks agou regarding an over 400lb bear that has been routinely seen on Church Mountain in Rockingham County not far from Broadway, Va. Public hunting so no permission required. I can give you the coordinates if you are interested and you can go to topozone.com.
