Big Bird

Took a good friend down to Patrick County last Sat. He has never had much luck with Spring gobblers and I was really hoping he would connect. I started to worry when the birds did not start gobbling at first light. It was not until the full moon dropped completely below the horizon did they start to get active. We set up on our first bird and soon relocated to get a better position. The bird came in very close but we never got a visual. Our next bird was a lot of fun. It's the first time I have had a bird completely circle my setup. We struck him when he was about 200 yards out and moving away from us. We hot footed it down and around him to try and get in front of him. We managed to get to within 50 yards and get his attention. He starts our way then I watch him walk just out of gun range around us. Not alarmed, just looking. He ducks behind a little rise after completing 3/4 of the circle and stops. I set out the decoy and move off behind my buddy about 35 yards. The bird kept responding and was getting really fired up when immediatley to me right at about 20 yards marches 2 hens. They headed straight for him. I was going to try and spook them but he would have seen me for sure so I just let them go. We flushed our next bird without ever knowing he was there. Our final bird responds at what sounds like about 300 yards on the edge of a field. We could not see him but figured he was just inside the opposing woodline. We make our way to the our side of the woodline and I start to get the decoy ready when out of the corner of my eye I see movement in the middle of the field. I look to see this bird heading toward us at a dead run. Both of us drop straight to the ground as he approaches to about 20 yards. I call and he paces at the woodline. It was a lovesick jake. We laughed a good one at that bird. He finally moved off and we headed for the truck. We saw a nice buck. His new rack was already breaking through. He walked by us at about 20 feet. We had a great time and I think my buddy will definitely try it again.

what about that full moon discussion we had about march 28th?...look under east wind title about that date...I have never thougth the moon set made them gobble but you may be on to soemthing.I always found the wind to blow a lot a daylight if the moon sets rightat daylight-thus-not much gobbling on those conditions.

GN, I had not posted this yet, but you better believe that I was thinking about it Saturday. Where I was it was windy as heck , and from the east, and guess what NO GOBBLES!!!! Only one bird in the area killed and he gobbled twice!!!
