I hunted the mountains last week and had to set up below a gobblin bird. Sure 'nough, he went up hill swung around down hill and came in up hill. He's still going up hill as far as I know, but it got me wondering why they prefer going up hill.

My guesses are: (1) they can stay hidden and just peep over the hill to see what's going on. (2) Most hunters approach an area from the bottom of the ridge which has taught the old toms to be suspicious of hens below them.

Any other ideas?

Hello Charlie,

Great points youve made. I think another reason they like to come uphill is the ease of escape if they encounter danger ! Its alot easier for them to turn and take flight going down hill than to turn and take flight uphill!! Just my 2-cents...

I don't know why but as a turkey hunter in my teens (I am 41 now) we had a saying even back then...Turkeys Walk Up and Fly Down!

Don't know why but it was a good rule of thumb.
