GOBBLENOW
Posted on Thursday, April 25, 2002 - 11:59 am:

Yestrday I took a guy in his 60's who had never killed a bird before. Perfect gobbling morning I thought as it was 45 and no wind and clear. We heard several birds at daylight (on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee) and had two just over the edge from the knob top we were on. 45 minutes after first gobble a 2 yr old is at 25 yds in full strut and I am telling him friend to shoot him now!!from behind the tree . He got the whole show as the bird had gobbled a bunch and came in strutting drumming and gobbling. 10.5 beard 19 lbs. Too tell you the truth I think I was more excited about it than he was but then I get pretty fired up when the plan comes together.

Hey GN,

You were in my neck of the woods. Were you on Catoosa or private land?

The birds are really getting cranked up for the last two weeks. I need two more to limit out (I've killed three, twice before, but never four)!

Voldoug- I realize you had instructed me to stay home but this was just barely over your way, so I did not think you would mind...hahha...private land, but terrain very similar to Catoosa. I usually find the plateau birds to not get in the game (for us hunters anyway) until the latter parts of the Tenn season. Thus I stay away until about now usually. Probably miss some good hunting but I have had too many silent mornings over there to drive that far earlier in the season. Interestingly, the fellows I hunted with had heard absolutely zero all day dawn till dark on tues; could not even get a bird to gobble on the roost. But daylight the next am(weds), there were many birds gobbling their brains out for 1.5 hours until the rain started. Then nothing late in the day when it cleared a bit , and nothing again this am..I mean not the first gobble. Course the weather is probably the factor this am as it was 58 and rainy and nw at 25 mph.
