Strutstopper and I got into the woods extra early on this absolutely perfect morning to work a bird or 2, but as luck would have it this is the first time in all my years of turkey hunting not a single gobble, cluck, putt, scratch, or wingflap was heard. Nothing, Zero, Zilch and we walked some serious miles. Now for the but part.......

We considered the day a success after watching a 400+ lb mama black bear go by with her 2 one-year old cubs in tow. A truly beautiful site that is rare in deed. We completely forgot we were there to hunt turkeys.

Did I say 2 cubs? Five minutes later, from our vantage point high up on a ridge point, we hear the tell tale cry of a third lost cub coming from the direction the first 3 bears had come from out of the hollar. I couldn't resist. I called back to the cub and it made bee-line right for us. The mama bear was in such a hurry apparently, she didnt bother to notice she only had 2/3's of her offspring. Well the poor fella got to about 30 yards below us and realized we didn't smell like his Mom and siblings. He literally disappeared without us having any idea which way he went.

Anyhow, I don't know how many of you routinely see bear but it is only the second time in my nearly 30 years of hunting. She sure was majestic.

By the way, she went up the ridge right where Strut and I were parked for about 45 minutes just 15 minutes earlier. If we stayed not sure she would have been happy to see us considering the cubs.

Who needs turkeys when you can witness that?
