Well, I got to hunt this morning because of a dentist appointment at 9:30am that kept me from going to work first thing in the morning. Wow, am I happy I got to go to the dentist. I tried to roost a bird last night, but was unsuccessful. I went back this morning and hunted in the same area because it had been productive last season, and sure enough-I heard a gobble. Actually heard maybe 3-4 birds. The others were far off. I set up about 150 yards from him and put out my two hens and got set. I could hear what may have been a renegade hunter off towards the edge of the property, but still on the farm I was hunting. He was making some pretty sorry crow calls in an effort to keep my bird gobbling. I didn't make a sound. I made some soft calls as it was getting to be about 'fly down time' and he answered them all. After he hit the ground, he immediately gobbled---he was much closer than anticipated. Some real hens started chimming in from the ridge over and he answered to them also. I then started some aggressive calling and that put that bird on a conveyor belt right to me. I first saw him at 75 yards in full strut and then he came working towards me. I don't believe he ever noticed the decoys. It wasn't fully light and they were tucked off behind me in an effort to get me closer to that Tom. He got to within 30 yards and I took him out while he was in full strut. Stoned him. Didn't twitch a leg, or make an effort to flap. What a great hunt. It was 6:14 a.m. ~20 lbs. ~10" beard ~1.0" spurs Thats what I'm talk'n bout! Good luck you guys! This was in the northern piedmont, I'll be back in the western mountains this weekend (I almost got washed off the mountain with all the rain in the mountains on the opener!) |

You're right about that. I got my wisdom teeth out a week ago and hunted last saturday all chipmunk faced. I could hardly use a diaphragm and couldn't blow on an owl call at all. Wonderful feeling. Dentist told me today I had two 'dry sockets' for what thats worth. Sure hurt still. That turkey eased some pain though! I didn't even feel that stock thunder against my cheekbone this morning! Continued success to you this season knight va |
