Just got back from Texas and a great hunt.Got there a day early in case of plane trouble etc and landowner was nice enough to let us go out .Because of the hernia,I asked the old timer guide where he would set up if he couldn,t really move much,and I set up with a long hunt in mind.
2 soft calls on that slate that Freddy rigged for me and he came in slow but steady.He gobbled about 30 times during his 100 yard walk to the decoy and at 30 yards it was over.20lb,10 inch beard and inch and a quarter spurs.Real pretty bird and I,ll post pics when someone shows me how!
2nd bird was more luck than any other bird I,ve taken.They all flew down about 250 yards away,aout 50 birds,many jakes and 3 big strutting gobblers putting on a show.I called a few times but they had everything they need and I tried everything,went through every tactic but got no response...infact I probably over called because they were moving away but it was amazing to watch such a huge flock going through the motions.I put the gun down,took a drink of water and out of nowhere,a very loud gobble 20 yards right behind me.I froze,let him walk past,he was heading for the flock.I could make up a great story how I purred he stopped and strutted....but no....I carefully picked up the gun,poked it through a hole in my blind because I was tangled up in it(heart was doing 100 a minute) and shot him at 32 paces!A little smaller than the other bird,but it aged me !!I felt kind of sorry for him until he spurred me...got me good too!!
Anyway,2 nice Rios,great hunt.I leave for Farmville in 4 hours.Huge numbers of jakes this year,next year could be unreal.
Congrats to all bird takers so far,hang in there if your still fighting,and thanks to all regulars for the info you share,because when it all comes together,LIFE JUST DONT GET NO BETTER THAN THIS!!! |
