My experiences so far are that the birds aren't gobbling once they hit the ground. I have read with great interest you guys that have had the classic hunt this year and I am envious. I have been out in Augusta County and a few tree gobbles and NOTHING. Was out in NW Rockingham County today where a friend of mine saw 8 gobblers together 2 weeks before the season and 3 gobblers the Friday before opening day and again today, best I could do was shock gobble one who shut up when he hit the ground.

Seems they were calling much better 1-2 weeks ago and now don't want to talk at all. Never heard the woods so quiet.

Anybody else having this problem?

The birds are really henned up right now so I am seeing the same thing. The bird I got Monday came in silent. Once they leave the gobbler to nest, the gobbling should pick up. If you can find a longbeards travel route or his strut zone, might be your best chance to take him. A fellow hunter got his Saturday by getting in between a gobbler and the hens. The bird nearly ran over top of him.

Thanks for updates fellas. Was beginning to think I had the ONLY area where the turkeys arent talking. Or all the turkeys that WERE there went to the rest of the guys on the boards areas. This hot weather is a killer too. By 10 am, it is too hot to hunt with all the camo stuff and the plethora of "must have" equipment I haul around. Am doing a clean sweep of my vest and taking only the essentials. About died Tuesday hauling that stuff all around the forest. MIKE

Don't feel bad Piedmont, having same problem here in Frederick county to. Had two gobbling their heads off this morning too. But as soon as they hit the ground nothing. But two guys across the field got in front of them and sure enough they got one. Nice 2 yr old about 7 or 8 in beard with 3/4 spurs. All I managed to do was call in a lonesome hen, but I'll tell you it was great to hear a real hen at about 30 yards doing her own calls.

Appreciate the feedback D. I hate to use the term "henned up" but seems that further south they are a little ahead of us. Maybe next week we will be seeing the behaviour the others on the board south of us are seeing.

Hang in there Piedmont. Yo Bro - You're in the woods and having fun ain't ya? I'm sitting out here in the jungle waiting for you to score with a bad case of hunting envy. It ain't quite spring 2000 when we were out last chasing the birds but you still got several weeks to go. good luck!

Nope they did not gobble that much in Rockville on Wed. but still called in a nice bird for my friend. Heard only one bird this morning in north part of Cumberland this morning and boy was it hot. I wonder if the birds are staying in the woods due to the heat. Saw nothing in the fields and should be hearing about 5 birds in this area! Guess I will just have to keep plugging away.

Thanks Namster. Am going out tomorrow (Friday) so will let you know how it goes. What subspecies of the wild turkey you have in Hanoi?

My best to the better half.

I've only gotten to hunt twice - Sat. & Wed. in Bedford County. I've heard LOTS of gobbling all thru the morning which is usually good for me. I'm the guy who hunts till noon unless I have to work. I left them gobbling Wed at 9:00 am to head to work.

I was working to get ahead of them when I came upon another hunter who was set up and had to back off.

Right now my biggest problem in HENS and little/no time to hunt during the week.

As a blue collar working stiff, I feel strongly in favor of repealing the BLUE LAW against hunting on Sunday in VA and in favor of all day hunting. My friends can golf on Sunday and fish all day long. I just want my chance!! I'm sure it will happen one day but probably not in time for me to enjoy it.

My one cent. (It's all I have.)

Well... we played cat & mouse all morning, right up til 12:00. The mouse won.

Had a really nice bird sneak in to 50 yds while the boss bird gobbled his head off on the next ridge this morning. He wouldn't sneak in any closer.

I worked the boss bird right up til noon when a loud mouth hen came by me on the next ridge and went to him.

He'll talk well all thru the morning. Just won't come to the call. I've got to get some dekes out where he can see them and then maybe...

Had an awesome morning.

Birds are really henned up right now... Birds are gobbling well on the roost and then shutting up when they hit the ground. We were fortunate last week to be able to get some subordinate gobblers to come in while the boss was busy... Stay after them... it could bust loose soon...

Thanks for the encouragement Freddy. A bit discouraging reading everyone else's posts. But, the IRISHMAN has had pity on me and is going to take me out Thursday to his secret spot. I am so desperate I offered to just take a camera cuz all I want to do is work a bird, but he says "we'll be taken guns". YES SIR! Is all I could say.

The birds are busy with hens. Might do a little better later in the morning.Been pretty vocal here in Amherst and Bedford county. Got one the first day, he came in with 11 hens. Guess he was a little to greedy for his own good. You may try getting a little closer to the roost tree and try to get between the bird and his hens or try to be where he is headed. Hunted one for two years off and on shot at and missed twice, wouldn't gobble at all, found a little bottom he was strutting in, set up like I was on a deer hunt, wasn't as much fun but it worked! One good thing about not hearing them now is that you no they are with hens and breeding and the bulk of that is over in a couple weeks which should leave a couple good weeks of hunting, you might try another area a few miles down the road and find alot of gobbling, least thats how it is around here. hunting pressure can make them hush to.Be persistant and patient, it will pay off sooner or later. To bad you can't hunt in Va. on sundays. It makes it hard for a working man to find much time to hunt when you have to work six days a week and cant hunt after 12:00. Be careful and good luck friend.

Thanks Raferd. Well seems I have been in all the quiet areas this year. Have some private land to hunt in Augusta county, but it is just so far to drive for 4-5 hours of hunting. Spend more time getting there and returning. Hopefully Irishman is going to turn me on to some local birds in Fauquier County. Keep your fingers crossed.
