Went to one of my other spots in Surry and set up where I heard some gobblers during preseason scouting. At dawn I heard 4 birds, but none where real close. All were about 1/2 mile or more away. I identified the bird that was gobbling the most and beat feat toward him. When I got closer I came to realize that the bird was roosted across a huge 100 acre clearcut. The area was timbered in the fall and there was no cover between me and the bird. What the heck, I decided to try and call him across the clearcut. It took 3 hours, but I finally talked him into crossing it. He gobbled and strutted all the way. When he was about 150 yards out a deer fed behind me, caught my scent and started snorting and foot stomping. It didn't bother the gobbler one bit. When he was about 75 yards out another gobbler (or jake) came up behind me and cut loose with a gobble. That was the 1st time that turkey gobbled. I had no idea he was there and about jumped out of my skin when he cut loose. I could hear it walking, but I never tried to risk a look at it. It sounded to be only 30 yards away. Hearing the intruder the gobbler in the clearcut came into shooting distance and bang! He sported a 10 inch beard, 7/8 inch spurs. This is my second Surry bird in as many days. I should have had one the 1st day too. Its really striking me odd that I haven't heard or seen a hen yet. I've hunted 2 different places in Surry and have yet to run into a hen. Is anyone else experiencing this in Surry? I have to work tomorrow, but pick up vaction again on Thursday. Good Luck to everyone tomorrow!

Saw five hens in the field I hunted and got my bird. They were not with the gobbler.
