Gobbler Getter
Posted on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 - 7:31 am:

Yesterday morning was really wet from overnight rain. Didn't have one roosted so I was listening and hootin and crow calling but heard nothing. Continued to work back in the mountain and heard one way off. He coninued to gobble so I decided to climb and work my way along a steep ridge across from him. Never made it to the gobbler and at about 6:45 he stopped. Then the hens started. They were directly across form me and were raising cain. cutting and yelping, so I decided to get aggressive calling with them and kept it up using a mouth call and my box together. At about 7:00 two gobblers started gobbling and were closing on the hens. I figured it was over for sure and everything got quiet. Was just sitting and listening when I hear a familiar sound directly behind me. Drummin and spittin. A longbeard had slipped in on me silent and he was close. I sat motionless until I saw strut in to view below me at about 15 yards. The old ticker was really racin. My gun was still down on my legs and I had 3 trees between me and him that I could use to try and get in position. As his head went behind the first tree I jerked the gun up. The bird stepped out and saw movement and froze. I knew the game was about up so I hammered him. 18 lbs., 9 inch beard, right spur 7/8", Left spur 1". What a hunt!

Great Job GG! Alot better than my granddads and mine. First we start trying to get the same old stubborn gobbler. He starts out gobbling before and at daybreak then just shuts up and he's gone.So then we try another spot and get nothing, we decided to get a drink and try the other side of our homeplace. We just pulled of the main road onto the dirt road that runs along side of our land and wouldn't you know it right in the middle of the road is a young gobbler struting and three hens around him. We sat there in the truck for about 20 mins. and watched him with excitement and fustration, then two hens went out of site and the other one decideds to walk down the road. And sure enough the male follows, granddad tried to get around them but couldn't, he did run one of the hens back out to me she stopped 20 ft in front of me then ran off. So I slipped up onto the gobble and hen but as always they didn't want to stick around. We're going back in the morning to try and set up them and hope for the best. Just goes to show you win some you lose some.
