Well took my buddy out this morning, had the perfect setup for flydown except the ol' boy gobbled then flew down the mountain. ALL THE WAY DOWN! We worked our way down there and while he gobbled at us, cows, woodpeckers, crows, dogs and everything else. I figured he would be going to the field so we headed in that direction. 50 yards from the field and working our way down an old logging road the ol' boy gobbles from the far side of the field. We figure there is no way to get set up on that field (it's quite small) with out getting busted so we figured to use the old fire road as a funnel to bring him to us. After setting up and him gobbling about 10 times at everything we gave him a few yelps. Triple Gobble and here he comes. He comes within 40-50 yards for the next two hours, spitting and drumming, and gobbling every chance he got. We tried everything. Silent Treatment (which he hated) Agrresive calling (he loved that and would get pretty close but would not go more than 10 yards past that field) I even crawled out and started calling 30 yards back and he came to his "checkpoint" and that would be it. We finally busted our tails and went up and around the ol' boy to get to the other side of the field. About 70 yards from the opposite side of the field we were sneaking in when I hear "Putt". We both hit the ground and watch several birds feed their way past us at about 20 yards. One jake stuck his head up and looked me over good but after giving him a few putts back he went on about his buisness. After those birds hit the field we worked around trying to get a decent setup on the ol' boy. Right where we began to set up which was about 15 yards from the fields edge the ol' boy comes running into the field. (there's two fields side by side with a small strip of woods inbetween, he had been going back forth in them and WAS in the other field while we tried to set up) I got busted and he took off. The reason we never got a shot the first time was all the brush. I watched as I called and he strutted for a long ways to the edge of the field where the logging road begins but he refused to come down it. I know he gobbled over 100 times while we worked him if not 200. My buddy has never heard a bird spit and drum before and had never been that close to a hot bird. Needless to say it was a GREAT Hunt for both of us... Last years best on this bird was calling him into about 60-70 yards... i got a bit closer today :)

Scott...I think you've gotten personal with this bird. Knowing his home turf put you in the position to get the hunt that you got. It's just a matter of time before you even the score. Keep after him.
