GOBBLENOW
Posted on Monday, April 15, 2002 - 3:24 pm:

True. Texas this last weekend. Hunted three days. Friend's "deer lease". This is the down year for adult gobblers as drought from two years ago wiped out the entire year's birds so no two year olds. BUT Great hatch last year. Incredible numbers of bull-chested, full gobbling, strutting, drumming , spitting hen-chasing Jakes. We decided to do QTM and not shoot jakes. Called in perhaps 100 jakes in the three days..and that is not counting the jkaes in one incredibel episode on the second morning. First morning killed a old bird with 1 3/8 spurs...Freddy will post picture of the bird and the spurs for me . Later first day called in a beautiful old bird at 4:30(in 88 degrree weatehr ). Second day at daylight we set up on a roost area with three large dead (unleafed) live oaks...a first light I counted 145 birds that I could see in the trees. They flew down to our light calling literally right on top of us and were all aoround us at three yds to 50 yds. And stayed there for 20 minutes in full-jake strutting, gobbling etc...one ofthe most incredible sights I have ever seen in the woods. Not a mature gobbler visible in the entire group. Later we struck an adult gobbler with out hens and got him to march in at full strut for 20 minutes and I killed him at 30 yds. Friend killed another big bird later in the day. Had anothe adult bird off he roost at daylight on the third day but he never gave me a good shot. Picked yup a matched pair of fresh deer sheds that are five points on each side in the picture(plus anothe r big four point shed). If I were you all I would try to figure out a trip to west central texas naxt year, cause if it holds together I suspect it will be the hunt of a lifetime for 2 yr old birds out there.

AWESOME GN. Sounds like you are having a great season. Save a few birds for us now. Go kill yourself a merriam now and give us some more stories. Next time take a pic of all the roosted birds, that would be cool.

GN: Great job! I guess you had fun and hope you are glad to be back where the turkeys don't sound like yard birds.LOL.. It's hard to beat an eastern birds gobble..for me. Are you actually measuring spurs before you shoot these limbhangers? LOL..you sure have bagged some boss birds this year. good job.

TP -it has been the year of the spur for sure. It just seems when I get out there and roll the bird over to check the spurs I am getting pleasantly surprised every time. I am not complaining as they are all trophies. Are you hunting nw SC mountains or more in the flater areas towards Columbia on the Broad , if you do not mind me asking(and are your hens sitting yet)?
