Got up this am and it felt like may. Had a thunder storm come thru at 4:00 this morning. Alot of times after a storm the birds gooble good and today was no exception. Heard 6 gobble at daybreak along with 2 hens yelping. It was very foggy so I thought they may stay on the roost a little longer. At 7:00 I hadn't heard a gobble for 20 minutes so I started very agressive yelps and cuts with a different striker on my slate call and got answered by 3 gobblers together. They didn't like toned down calling so I got aggressive again and they all gobbled at the same time.Kept calling then finally saw them coming. 3 longbeards. shot the dominant bird at 20 yds and the others stood looking at their partner flopping. They stayed for about 5 minutes then I saw 2 jakes coming in. The other 2 big turkeys went over to them and started chasing them and gobbling like crazy wondering where the hens went. It was a very exciting morning and hopefully one of the others will be ready to come in tomorrow for my brother in-law who by the way got a jake this morning. |
