After Saturday, I made up my mind that I was going to hunt Monday before I had to work. So, Freddy roosted two birds Sunday night that would be an "easy" spot to get to (for me) before work.

It rained a little last night which quieted the woods down and we got set up this morning with no problem, put up our blind and put out 2 hen decoys. It was foggy this morning but it started lifting just about gobbling time. Which was perfect. We heard the birds spitting and drumming in the tree. The birds pitched down and the show started. Freddy was clucking to them and sounded too sweet for them to pass up. They were coming our way, I finally spotted them and one of them was strutting and looked as big as a school bus. I got around on the birds and the strutter was about 15 yards out and he dropped out of strut and started looking hard at our setup. I could not get my gun around on him because of a little tree that was just a few inches too close to me, so I opted for the other longbeard behind him. He came out from behind a tree and stopped. I aimed, squeezed the trigger, and MISSED!!!!! I was peeking…and didn't have my head down. ARGH!!!!! And the bird flew away as pretty as you please. So I educated these two birds really well, but I will be at it again tomorrow morning.

Oh well, as I said earlier it was bound to happen sooner or later. I have been fortunate for the last several years not to miss a bird. But I guess I feel a little better knowing that this was a clean miss and he did not fly off wounded.

I'm sorry honey... It was a very exciting hunt and it happens to all of us sooner or later. Keep your head up and we'll go get another one!

WOW, Amy sorry to hear that, but your right almost everone has it happen if they hunt long enough. I guess Freddy is off the hook now for his miss, and it will not be as fun to pick on him since you have now experienced the DREAD of a miss. At least they flew away unharmend. Good luck in the morning. I will not be back out until thur or fri.

I hate myself when this happens. But it does. Sounds like your miss was clean so he is running free now, thinking about how to avoid that lightning around him .

Amy: Gobblenow said it in fun, but think about what he said!! I've found that clean miss birds often don't know what the heck that loud boom was....a very close clap of thunder? Some hunters think a bird like this is all boogered up and won't be easy to call in again. I don't find this to be the case at all. I've even called up several missed birds later in the same morning and tagged them. You'll get him next time. I'd give hime a morning to rest and get right back after him while he's alone.

Well, I didn't miss my bird this AM. I finally broke the ice and bagged a 19 1/2 lb bird -- 1 inch spurs and 10-1/2 beard! A great hunt. I got on the ole boy mid morning. Freddy will be proud of me since I used my new Primos Power Crystal. He couldn't resist the cutting and raspy yelps.

The birds down here are FINALLY losing some hens. Everyone is working birds from mid-morning until noon. Man we've got birds everywhere this year. I think it's really going to get hot in another week or two. My dad heard 5 birds this morning up until about 11:00 AM. He needs some help protecting himself so I'm going with him in the AM. Good luck guys.
