This am in Tenn had a couple of gobbling birds up the ridge above me...they gobbled good till they hit the ground.I thought one was coming my way and one went up the ridge to a big mountain with hens. I sat there 1.5 hours and knew the bird would show any minute. A jake had been in and around for 45 minutes and I felt the other big bird must be close. I felt I was in the wrong place as the morning wore on and felt I needed to move 75 feet for a better field of fire, and to give a different call location... as that sometimes works very well to make a hung -up bird close. Got 50 feet and the jake was in sight and putted flew. Sat down anyway and started calling again, as it was really steep and the bird flying might not have bothered a gobbler off either side. Fifteen minutes later I catch myself daydreaming and have forgotten to look around and as I start to turn my head there is a gobbler 25 yds off to the side, just standing there staring through me. He putts and runs and flies off the ridge and I did not even attempt to get a gun pointed towards him. When the woods are wet and you cannot hear them walking and they are on silent running as many are at this time now in Tenn, you really cannot let your guard down for a minute. I have only made this mistake a hundred times.
