I'm wondering what you guys feel is the most effective strategy for hunting in the rain. It looks like rain on Saturday, so I was interested in you alls thoughts. I know the turkeys like to hit the fields in the rain, but I've never heard one gobble that much in the rain, although I'm sure they do. Any input would be helpful and appreciated.

I do not mind the rain, if I can find a way to stay relatively dry. The birds will be on the lookout for the ladies, rain or shine(assuming the mood of the season has grabbed them). A warm soft drizzle has provided more positive results for me than a driving hard cold rain...probably has more to do with my comfort in the former as opposed to the latter. Of course thunder is an asset in encouraging gobbling. I would get to a field or on a logging road or open area if you are going to set-up and try to call in a bird without having a specific targeted gobbling bird, Birds love fields in the rain it seems.2 cents

I echo GN, fields, fields, FIELDS! I have a theory why. A turkey's defenses consist of sight and hearing. When it's raining, both are compromised in the woods. Rain and water dripping from trees cause leaves at the turkey's level to jump and wiggle, just sit and watch sometime. We all know that rain in the woods can sound like an elephant wandering through the aftermath of a potato chip factory explosion. When a turkey is in a field in the rain, he is expanding his safety zone in that his range of vision is expanded to compensate for his hearing defense that is diminished by a suddenly "noisy" world. Just my theory. On a side note; Hey GN! I was in Johnson City Sunday morning and saw a couple of gobblers. I was heading south on 181 (I think) a few miles from I-81. They were strutting in field on the right, just before the highway goes over the railroad. Don't know if that is anywhere near your neck of the woods, but I thought I would drop it in here.

MF-too far away for me, but thanks fro the tip anyway. It is incredible how many turkey s are visible from the various interstates. BTW I think you are correct about wet condition defenses..I also think the turkeys might be a half-step slow running when they are soaking wet and it makes it harder to run fast or fly or get airborne...so they need the big takeoff area, and the fields /roads give them a bigger, longer clear runway. 2 cents

GN-The added weight theory sure seems to hold water. What a sorry pun!
