GOBBLENOW

Hunted this morning is east Tenn and I am stunned by the size of a bird we took. Here is the story. My friend Dan and I got on a gobbling bird using a locator at 11 am. When we set up about 30 yds apart we could hear hens in several directions below us so we just got after them a bit . Dan kept up his box call yelping and I kept the slate hummming and we pulled the first hen right in to 20 yards and she stood there with us and fast-clucked without putting for 10 minutes and the poor ol' gobbler had no choice but to come right on in with us too. Down he went at 27 yds, and only 20 minutes after we located him. This is a huge bird..25 lbs-scaled weight, not estimated, 11 1/4 inch beard and one spur was accurately measured at 1 5/8 and the other 1 1/2...here below is the picture of the bird.... it makes me wonder why we are seeing such large birds this year, as two friends(besides Freddy) have also taken birds of 25 lbs in this first week of the season. This is a very large and atypical bird for east Tenn areas. (p/s Voldoug was right I guess,as I should have stayed on my home turf all along).

Wow really nice bird! Good job guys!! I saw a thread on another forum about the same subject recently. Hope it holds' true in Virginia this year... Wouldn't mind a 20+ pounder :)

I have always been skeptical of all the very large birds taken in East Tenn. I do believe this one and I believe the one I'm hunting is in that weight range. He has another longbeard with him and his size makes the second longbeard look like a hen. Just have to wait and see. Congrats on a fine bird!

GN I never really believed the 25+ pounders, but I have no doubt if you weighed it it was that big. I agree with Scott and hope our Virginia birds are that big this year. The spurs and beard of that beard are awesome too. CONGRATS.

Thanks for the congrats fellows. I want to emphasize that the participation of two pretty fair callers made this hunt succesful. Shopson,I agree totally with your skepticism. I share it usually on reports of birds that size in our area, and when I hear them the skepical part of me says this is a barnyard bird somebody has been feeding. Well, this was one of those free range characters that cruise the low ridges in the area where you and GS46 are from . I will tell you that by the time I carried it back to the truck there was no doubt it was big. We actually weighed the bird twice. It is right on 25 lb on the nose. This bird has been a bit of a nemesis for a couple of years, and Freddy and I actually worked this bird twice i n the last two years. Freddy and Amy saw the beard and spurs this weekend.
