Hey all! My question has to do with what me and my buddy found while scouting a few days ago. We were on a old slate dump trying to roost some. Well, while we we're walking we noticed some tailfeathers in the rye grass. Walking on the feathers became more and more plentifu. We started finding wing feathers, breast feathers, and more tail feathers. While we we're following the trail, my buddy said "check that out!". Under an old scrub pine was a half picked and bloody gobbler. Man, this bird was hurt bad!! After puting the poor critter out of it's misery we noticed that along the back were two sets of bite marks. They were about 2 inches (from canine to canine) across. He had a 10 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs. Real nice bird! We figured it was a coyote but they aren't really plentiful around here yet. Could have been a bobcat. But what really puzzles me is that we found this bird on a perfectly flat field with nothing but rye grass and scattered scrub pines. Whatever it was put the macdaddy sneak on him. We stopped by the sheriff's house on the way home and showed him the bird hoping he could give a suggestion and to cover our butts because of carrying a half picked and bloody Tom in the back of my truck before season. Any thoughts??

sixshot... sounds like a bobcat or yote' to me... don't sell yourself short on the yote's up there... read an article a couple of years ago (think it was in 97'-98') that Tazewell county held more coyotes than any other area East of the Mississippi. I called one up last year on the other side of 615. The big ridge across from the entrance road to Brushy. He came in to about 60 yards but wouldn't close the distance for my mossy to pop him.

I would put my money on the yote...that bird was probably in a full strut, back turned when he got hit...I drove up on a coyote in tenn this summer that was hidden perfectly in a foot high patch of grass(the only tiny piece of cover for 100 yds in any direction) and he did not move until after a minute or so of me looking at him out a window at 20 feet or so, motor running..I just happened to look down and see those eyes looking up at me or I would have driven right on by.
