I am glad the original message thread drew so many responses. This combined with Freddy's online diary should get everyone sufficiently fired up. I figured even with my high speed connection (ok I'm bragging a little) the first thread was taking a bit long to load so this is a continuation to save us all a bit of time. Please keep the information flowing, it is of value to us all. Especially those that just cant get out as often as we want. MIKE |

Saw giant gobbler in Smithfield Va.on mon. i was on my way home from work when i saw him just out side of town in the field behind smithfield auto glass. He is probaly the largest bodied bird i have ever seen,he dwarfed the birds around him and one of them was a good sized Tom. He was not in strut he was feeding along, looked like he might of had two beards too he would not turn so i could get a good look at it through the binos.Wish i could hunt that land. JMF |

Heard 5 separate birds in Bedford Co. this morning. Also found a heavily used strutting area in an old logging road adjacent to a clear cut thats a few years old now. Several hen and gobbler tracks, tons of droppings, and wing tip marks in the dirt all over the place. Can't wait for opening day!! Old Dominion Tom |

I went out on Saturday and heard a lot of gobbling in a field bottom. I eased down the woods edge to get a better look and,a better I did. I saw a group of about 10 hens with four big strutters all longbeards. As they moved up the field edge 2 more gobblers also long beards joined them total 6....WOW. I went out again on Wednesday to try to video the turkeys to my suprise they did not come to the field. They all gobbled good ( I do not call in the off season or while scouting)for a while then stopped I thought here they come. About 10 minutes past and I could hear soft hen tree yelps but no gobbles then I heard a very distinct sound sfittttttt....booooom and walking in the leaves I turned ever so slowly and 20 steps over my right shoulder stood a nice gobbler all blowed up and being "King Turkey" as my three yr old says. He stayed there until four hens joined him and they moved off down the hill. As for the video it was non happening but I will try again in the morning (fri). Looks like a good spring in this part of Virginia. Jon |

Heard several birds this AM... gobbled well on the roost and all the closest birds to me had hens and shut up when they hit the ground. Hope those hens go to nest, say like... next Friday!! |

Been seeing 1-6 Gooblers everyday this week. Sometimes with hens sometimes without. The hens were scattered since thuesday.Haven't seen a big gang since then. Will see two or three together sometimes but not the big gangs of twenty or more.Seems like the time is here in Bedford now if only I can survive till the 13'th. |

Went out in Bedford county today, early in the morning, around 545, temps were rather cold, did manage to hear one gobbler at exactly 610, pretty sure the cold temps and the hens played a role in them being so quiet... hope the forecast for next sat is warm and sunny cause its showtime!! :o) |

Did some scouting in National Forest in Montgomery County this morning. Heard one gobbler 6:30 a.m. for about an hour. Was roosted high up on a ridge finger off the main ridge. Found plenty of scratchings and scat. Is it the 13th yet? |

I heard four birds Sat am. One was gobbling good and sounded ready for action. I will scout again Fri morning to determine which bird I will hunt first. The forecast says a chance of Rain Sat, but that is still too far away for me to believe it yet. The temps are getting warmer so that should be better. |
