Just curious how does your calling change as the season progresses? Early, I like to get aggresive if the bird likes it. I use alot more "waitin' them out" mid-way through. Once the hens go to nest I search for that lonely bird once again. Only I tone my calling down and act like a call-shy hen.

yeah my calling goes from aggresive to very very little during the season. towards the end i do a whole lot more blind calling with yelps just every now and then. i will do some soft stuff like purring to help keep me intertained :)

As turkey numbers continue to climb I find myself dealing with hens more than the gobblers they are with early in the season. Seems like every day is a battle with a dominant hen, trying to figure out what she's up to and where she'll lead the gobbler to. I often try to challenge her to a fight. Sometimes this works. Other times she'll take her man away from me. My calling therefore is greatly influenced by the hens and their proximity to the gobbler, etc. I usually have better success actually dealing with gobblers themselves later in the morning (after the hens have lost interest or been bred)during the first few weeks.

As the season progresses, I definitely find myself adapting my calling to what the gobblers & hens are doing, the weather, green up, etc.

A lot of times I have found that challenging the hen will not work, and she will carry the bird away. In this case use a lost yelp and sound like a friendly hen that wants to join the flock. This will work when the challenge does not. Its a crap shoot every day with what type of calling to use, I guess that why I love it so much. IS IT THE 13th YET?????

I change my calling style every day because the birds are different every day. If they are gobbling aggresively, then I call aggressively with loud yelps, cutts and purrs. If they are quiet, then I tone it down and use soft yelps and purrs. I try to match what they are doing. Only 3 more weeks to go!!!!!

I agree with you GG. I match my calling with the bird. I "take his temp." as some say. If he cuts of my yelps then I call soft to him, because he is hot. If he gobbles occasonally at my calls I turn up the heat. Ussally more than not hens play a big part. I try to match there calls, this works well in the fall. If she has a series of eight yelps and two clucks then I mimic her. I guess I am saying the same thing back this get her mad most of the time and she comes in to fight because this is nature, the pecking order and sometimes that old bird follows like a big ol puffed up cabbose. I alway try to be the first hen on the ground and ready to bread so that tom is interested in me , but be careful not to call to much to a roosted tom sometimes he will wait you out to come to him. :) JON
