After all the cleaning, eating ,feather, beard, spur saving, what do you do with a carcass of a bird? Is there an ethical issue and a legal issue ? As fro thelegal side, most states game laws prohibit "wanton waste" of a game bird/animal taken while hunting, or have a statment similar to that in the regulations. Is it illegal to just throw it away in Va? The law is sort of vague in Tenn about what constitutes"wanton waste" of a game animal, and the officers say you know it when you see it...so not much predictability. I have heard that in Texas, apparently, if you breast a bird and do not take the legs and all other meat from it, it can be considered wanton waste. I have to say that I breast most of my birds, cut the legs and back meat from some , but not every time. I usuusally try to take the wing bones out for calls, save priamry feathers for bownhunitng friends, some of the body and wing feathers go to flytying friends, and I ususally keep some of irredescent feathers becasue i cannot bear to throw them away. Then if circumstances permit I ususally take the carcass back in to the woods or fieldswhere it came from if possible and discard it. Spome peopel bury the carcass. Others heave them in the dumpster. I would not want to dishonor the bird or the santctity of the hunt or the bird by breasting one and heaving it in a dumpster but I may be more sensitive than most on this subject. There are some transportation issues here too, as in states wheree you check one in you have to have the whole bird, and "tagging " a bag of breast meat, tail feathers, spurs, etc does not get it. So if you haul oner from the field and then haul the carcass back to dispose of it, you can spend a bunch of time here. I know many peopel(and me sometimes) clean the whole bird, in which case, after the bones are cooked, soup is made, you have a handful of bones to discard or bury or whatever...anyway...isthere an ethical issue , besides the legal issue abou t how you deal wit h a turkey carcass?

VA has a similar "wanton waste" law and I have also asked what constitutes that and got the same answer "you know it when you see it." The game warden I spoke with said they normally use it when dealing with poached game where the trophy parts (antlers, beard, spurs, etc.) is taken off and the rest of the animal is left. He saw no problem with the breasting of a turkey as that is what he did with them as well. I breast almost all of my turkeys and save the wings for friends to make calls from.

As far as disposing of the carcass I usually take the carcass into to the woods and discard it. Normally it's not where I hunt because like you said, you have to check in the bird and the bag of breast meat won't cut it. I normally dispose of them on the farm where I live after cleaning them at the house.

Interesting question...

the one thing that i hate is... (see it a lot with deer on national forest) .... someone taking it back to the national forest after they are finished with it and dumping it beside the road. Where I hunt there are three deer left over from deer season right beside the road, one was even laid on a rock beside the road making it that much easier to see. doesn't make the rest of us hunters look that nice....my two cents

My opinion is this, The Good Lord smiled on you that morning, and I don't think you should waste what can be used. I know my family have chewed on those tough ol' drumsticks a few times in the past. I know there are different situations but I try to use every bit of a blessing that I can.

sixshot: I agree with you. Take those legs, thighs and back and cook the meat off the bone in either a crock pot or in a pressure cooker. Chop the meat up a bit and make a turkey salad..yum. But of course my name is turkeypicker. I do skin more birds out these days, but I much prefer to scald, pluck, and singe a bird time permitting.

USE THE WHOLE BIRD!!!!!"Breasting"as the term some use is,to me,like killing a deer and removing the tenderloin and back strap and then throwing away the rest!!!!ITS WRONG.If you dont want the "WHOLE" thing,DONT KILL IT.

I find pluckimg to be easier sometimes. The meat also does not dry out when you cook it and if you deep fry it tastes a lot better. I cut of the wings at the joint and the legs at the knuckle. Boil a pot of water on the turkey cooker outside. When it boils I dip the bird head first for 30 seconds and remove then start pulling. I can pluck it quicker than I can skin it. Most of the time I have little pin feather left I burn them off with a match. The ols bird looks funny with no feathers and they really have a long neck you can't tell with all the feathers. Try this and you ussally have only a box of feathers to throw out. Also I did not mention cut off the beard before you dip the bird. Jon

It is a personal thing and as long as its legal we have the right to our own opiion .I use as much of the bird as possiable i breast it out for table fair and i cut out the legs and other meat to boil down for soup or turkey salad, this stuff is 'yummy 'to quote my 5yr old.Iam blessed to have friends in the craft biss. so they have all the feathers i dont use.I uave burried burned and baged and dummped whatever is left, just like i do with a deers pounch. It depends on where iam and what the circumstances are. Since last season was my first turkey hunting, I don't have a lot to go on. However with the birds I took last year it was darn near a religious experience so I felt obligated to use the whole bird. I have friends that just breast their turkeys, pheasant, grouse, ducks, geese, etc.. and I have no problem with that. It is just how each person feels about the situation.

I agree Big Bird. I don't have a problem with someone just breasting a bird. I have done before a few times too, but prefer to use the dark meat and it's very good to me if prepared right.
