Hello all on the board. My name is Joe and I'm looking to get into hunting turkey and deer. I've only ever hunted squirrel at home in AR, so I'm still green when it comes to hunting. Would appreciate any and all input to guide me in the right directions. I've been reading a lot on the board and I think this one has the most info that I've found so far. To give a bearing of where I'm at, I'm probably going to be hunting within a two hour drive of Norfolk in any direction. Was looking at the Remington 870 Express Magnum as a gun I can use on deer and turkey. Haven't bought anything yet, just an idea.. Thanks in advance for all the help, and keep up the awesome board Freddy!

Welcome! Someone closer to your area will have to give you some advice about hunting areas, etc. as I'm located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Roanoke.

However, I've been using a Remington 870 Wingmaster for over 22 years now and she's never let me down. She's scheduled for some second skin camo this summer. That will be the first thing I've done with this gun in that time. She looks like a duck/goose gun with a 30" full choke compared to today's small specialized turkey guns. But, as my uncle often said, "I'd like to see all of the game that gun has killed in a pile. You wouldn't be able to see over it!"

I know for a fact that there is a much broader choice available today than there was back then and you can't go wrong with many of them. The gun you mention should be one of the many guns that would do well for you.

Joe the 870 is a super choice. I am a Reminton man and have an 1100 and a 1187 Super Mag in addition to the 870. You can get different barrels such as a rifled barrel or whatever you want for different types of hunting. Plus the screw in choke sytem allows a variety of choice in patterns. I am sure there are others on here that would go with a Remington, and others that would pick another brand, but for an all around gun the 870 has got to be on the top 3 list.

Been using an 870 for(real) close to 40 yrs. Never failed me, mechanically that is. If you could find a used "wingmaster" mosdel you might get a better quality gun for the same money. Be sure it acceppts screw in choke tubes. Also I would not get a barrel l onger than 26". Good luck...GN
