I have seen wounded turkeys hide and hold like a rabbit but here is a new one on me. Last spring we visited a friend in Georgia. While driving down his mile long driveway I spotted a hen in the field beside it, grass was about 8 inches tall. When we got up beside her, flop, she was gone, just dropped flat in the grass. After we moved on and looked back she popped back up. When we returned shortly she did the exact same thing. We've all heard about big bucks hiding and letting people walk by and if turkeys are doing the same thing there are bound to be more around than we know. What have yall seen? By the way, his place was turkey paradise. They were everywhere, like robins on a golf course. We videoed one morning and I got 3 strutting gobblers with one hen and even got footage of one breeding her. Also caught a 9 pound largemouth the first hour I was there. Needless to say, he is my BEST friend. Ha.

I have seen the same thing. I was training my turkey Dog, and my daughter said there is a turkey. I stopped backed up and nothing. But she insisted that one was there. So I turned the puppy out ans started walkingthrough the field. The gobbler let us walk within 5 feet of him before he took off. He bascially hit the dirt, wings spread out and eveything. When he jumped. he just pushed himself off of the ground straight into flight.

Mud... I was watching a longbeard feeding in a field during deer season many years ago... The field was a hay field and probably 8" high at the time. Another hunter approached the field and all of a sudden the turkey hit the deck... (The turkey saw the hunter LONG before I even knew he was there. I thought the turkey was dusting or something when he laid down) He laid in the grass as the hunter walked by 60 yards from him. 2 minutes after the hunter was gone the bird popped right back up and started feeding again... I learned a lot that day!

when I was growing up we had a large field right beside our house. It wasn't planted or anything just some ol' timothy grass and such growing in it. One day during the summer I was out walking around and was about 50 yards from the tree line going into the woods. I almost stepped on a hen that was lying on the ground... she took off and all of a sudden about 12 other turkeys jumped up all around me. I had walked about 60 yards in their direction from a small pine thicket and never saw hide nor feather of these turkeys.... there were several polts with these hens and I always thought they were just hiding because of the polts... guess not huh?

Several years ago while driving down a road with my son in NY we saw a big gobbler strutting in the road, he ran off to the side when we got close to him. When we stopped to see where he went he all but disappeared, my son spotted his red head sticking out from under a fallen tree less than ten yards away. Only after we turned back to the car did he jump out and run up the hill.

It's amazing what a turkey can do!!! I also have seen them hide in no cover and had them hold in a brushpile with two hunters and two dogs stomping and sniffing all over it. Old gobbler busted out of nowhere right under our feet. #9's can and did take him down.

I saw a very large Osceola that had been strutting in a field just lay down and hide one day. It was rather interesting.
