Guys: My dad and I used to go up in early May to hunt the Jefferson NF in the area of Pulaski (Max Meadows) up to Blacksburg. It's been years since we've hunted that area though. We talked about rekindling some old memories by taking a trip up in early May. Anyone hunt that area? How's the population and pressure in that area now? Any suggestions appreciated?

i hunt bland county right near the wythe and pulaski county lines on national forest... first week it's pretty busy after that just on the weekends.... have hunted max meadows on a private farm where there was NO pressure.... girlfriend broke up with me and put the end to that hunting (dang i miss that farm ;-) ) i've heard the forest near blacksburg can get pretty busy also around the first week or two than slows down a little (have done all my hunting in montgomery county on private also)

When I was in college at Radford a few years ago, I would frequently hunt the public land around Blacksburg. We found decent turkey numbers in the Poverty Creek and Craig Creek areas. Try Craig Creek about 3 to 5 miles from 460. Start scouting when you get to the church camp or maybe a mile or so before. Try Poverty Creek at a little foot bridge that is on the left coming down the mountain from 460. Sounds like TScottW99 could be hunting around Little Walker Creek, one of my favorite areas also. My experience here is that pressure dies off quick after first week. I haven't hunted this area much lately since the Forest Service ruined what was an incredible public hunting area (game quantity and quality, we were killing 7 points and better consistently) by opening a gate that led to the area. But that is another topic, good luck turkeypicker.

I agree with tscott and mudfork about the pressure. Weekends are busy, but weekdays are okay after first week. I have found decent numbers of birds in the Jeff National Forest in Montgomery County and the Mt. Rogers Nat'l Rec area. I think a couple of us on here are going to try the new Big Survey Area in Wythe County purchased last year by the VDGIF. Have not hunted Pulaski County NF yet. I have scouted one day and saw two flocks just driving along the gravel roads. No idea about the pressure there. I know the Wytheville NWTF has a pretty big chapter. You might want to give their RD or prez a call as well. Good luck.
