I went to see Dr Ralph Stanley in a small 110 person venue in Knoxville last night. Incredible to have a Grammy winner from last week showup for a small audience, but he is old school to say the least. Got me to thinking again about the really great old time southern appalachian turkey hunters whose names should be known(like the mountain music artists /bluegrass artists) to all of us turkey hunters in the region. I am not talking about people who have made a name selling calls or something or video "stars"...I am talking about great woodsman who hunted and killed spring turkey "when there weren't any." I only knew/met two of these people personally. Probably many of the great ones were so secretive about what they were doing ,their legacy is gone. here are some names I know ought to be considered. Roy Morgan of Tennesee; Ray Harper of Tenn; Ray Sutphin of NC; Giles Sewell(NC-VA). You got any nominess?

Jack Lombard of SC was killing turkeys before folks knew what turkey hunting was. He has tagged well over 100 longbeards, mostly in the northwestern corner (mountain region) of SC, where hunting is still tough, but nothing like as tough as it was during his hayday. I don't think he has missed tagging a longbeard since SC first opened a spring season. There was an article on him in the SC Wildlife Magazine some years back.

Add Sonny Boy Nichols(near Tellico Plains) and Homer Hooks(Cumberland mtns) from Tennessee. Hooks would swear he only made one call to any turkey he located.
