I hunted with a guy many years ago who used a small "box" call that I've seen only once or twice since. A separate striker (a wooden dowel perhaps) was used to strike or rub the top of the small box call to produce some sweet music.

Do any of you know what I'm describing? What it is called & if it is still made? I'd love to get my hands on one.

Actually, I have the "box" part of one around here somewhere that I was given but never came up with a satisfactory striker for it.

mtnbuk i believe you are talking about a scratch box. My Wife got me one for Christmas from Mr. Shively up in Stephens City called the super yelper. His webpage is http://www.superyelper.com/ Primos also makes a Scratch box that I just saw in the nite lite catalog. here's a pic of it.....

I have a collection of several variations on scratch boxes. Some are as large as the ones Scott has refferred to. Most are longer and more square. They are made from all kinds of wood. My favorites were made by the late Ray Sutphin from Charlotte .My absolute favorite is a call made from black ebony(like a pianao key) and I think Iahve all three of the ebony call like that which Ray evermade. Anyway, it helped me take a lot of birds. Some of hese scratch boxcalls are pretty fragile. I broke oneofthe ebony ones chasing a flopping bird offa 60 degree mtn, andRaty hadto put anew lip on it. The calls are used through out he south . The tom gaskins calls are vaiations ofthesewhichhave been on the market a long time.

As to the striker qurestion, try a 1/2 diameter wooden dowel ,about 3 inches long. A piece of school board chalk will probably work too. A piece of 1/4 round redwood or cedar molding will proably work best.. Try them without chalk and then add a little to taste to get it right.

I knew I'd get the info I needed from you guys. Thanks a lot.

I've relied on diaphrams & a variety of slates for a lot of years. Figured it's time to expand my repertoire.

The Primos Hen Yelper has been discontinued at Huntsmart.com. Will try Mr. Shively's Super Yelper next.
