It is realy cold this am in the Tenn Valley..like between 10 -15 degrees. I went out one day last year in early March to listen a little and it was 15 dgrees and I heard one gobble...I did not realize it was that cold then unitl I got to standing still before a daylight and I like to froze before I had to retreat to the truck. What is the coldest morning you can rememebr for hearing a gobble?

I hunted one morning probably 10 years ago on opening day and it was 19 degrees... Birds gobbled good that morning... I froze to death...

It's too easy to stay in the bed during preseason scouting when it's that cold!

I remember the ground being frozen several mornings last year in March and the birds were gobbling good. So I'm sure it was in the 20's.

From my humble experience I can only add that turkeys gobble when they want to, and nobody can figure out exactly when that is. Two years ago I watched one gobble his head off while sitting in a snow covered tree on a snow covered hillside in early March. I've heard what I call "gobblefests" during deer season that lasted more than an hour. And I know we all have been out there on beautiful April mornings when everything was silent.

GN: It was 8 degrees on my front porch last Thursday morning!!!! I'll have to agree with Freddy when it comes to scouting (listening) on those cold days. Hard to shed the covers. But when it's time to tote the Browning pump..now that's a different story.

I remember hunting with my Dad one April morning about 20+ years ago when it was 17 degrees. I had roosted 3 birds gobbling the afternoon before. I begged him to let me play hooky from school the following morning. He obliged and when we left for the woods it was 17 degrees! The birds gobbled their heads off. Daddy killed a 21-1/2 pound bird that morning (his heaviest bird to date). I thought I would surely freeze to death that morning. There's something about a mountain bird's long gobble echo through the hills and hollows on a crisp mountain morning...stirred a teenage boy's soul. I'll never forget that hunt and how proud Daddy and I both were to be there..together that day!

I also have hunted some hot gobbling birds in a snowstorm once. No luck with those birds though.

I think the really cold days will shut birds down early when they haven't started gobbling too much yet, but later in the season after they've been hollering a bunch already I don't think it phases them.

March 5, 2002, while on the front patio at work. 23 degrees, one started gobbling. Heard it twice and then, unfortunately, I had to start work.
