Do you think any wild turkeys survived from the last millenium in Virginia...maybe way back in the mountains or in the swamps? Or did they all get killed out and is everthing in Va now a descendant of the stocked birds of the 40's through today? Can you tell the physical characteristics of the "old" line birds , or have you heard them described by any old timers? In Tennessee the old timers say the really old birds have survived in some places, and the mountain bird-survivors are a smaller, darker colored birdthan the descendants ofthe stocked birds...what do you think about Va? |

I think those old timers in Tn. hit the nail on the head.....back in the mountains...."deep" birds are smaller and i think it's because they are a purer strain.....or they don't have as much to eat as those farm birds in the corn fields..lol...really though i don't think those stock birds did very well here in va.....thats why they started transplanting wild ones from one place to another.....a true wild turkey has pink legs the legs don't lie...i know up in new york the birds i've takin up there have an off pink color not like the deep pink color of the birds here in our mountains ......but who knows......i only know what i see.......and if hes gobbling comeing to the call i like'em whatever he is..... |
