I think the odds are greatly agst you if you set up to try to call a gobbler or gobbling bird that is located upwind from you. I always try to set up and prospect from an upwind position, either calling or moving downwind toward the quarry.. i have found this to be true in evn a light to moderate wind. Old timers have told me you cannot call one downwind at all. I persoannly think they are correct. I have seen some posts by some of you which say to hunt upwind in a very windy day, and I have heard the addage about keeping the wind in your face if you are deer hunting. But I think exactly the opposite rule is best if you are going to try to call a turkey. I would say that the wind in you face may be true if you are going to try to sneak up on a bird or if you are going to ambush one but if you want to call one I think you have to be in the upwind position? (I am not trying to start an argument about ambushing versus calling, I am asking a serious question about calling tactics). I know there are a lot of ver y good hunters on here and wonder what you think about trying to call one downwind or if you have ever called one downwind to your call.?

Downwind is one thing, Downhill is another!

I agree with you GN... I want the wind blowing toward the turkey for 2 reasons-

1. The turkey can hear your calling/locating better.
2. Turkeys do not like to walk with the wind at their back as it ruffles their feathers and makes it hard for them to display. Also, turkeys will almost always feed/travel going into the wind.

Very good post GN!

Well now, I guess I learned something too cause I try to adhere to this for the # 1 reason Freddy mentioned but like Scott did not think about # 2. GN is this when the wind is blowing moderate to high or does a slight breeze count too?

I think a turkey's defensive mechanisms are primarily its eyes, but its hearing cannot be far behind. I think they must be able to hear predators a lot better going upwind and they are just more saftey-comfortable going in that direction in to the wind. I will not even attempt to call one downwind myself(anymore). Hody, I think the birds are much , much more likely to want to move to a call upwind . I will just about not set up on one in any(even light) downwind situation(where the bird is upwind of me) if I can find any possible alternative. In shifting wind I have had more circling approaches by birds than usual too(like about all the circling approaches have been when the wind blows hard, then lays , then maybe gusts form a diferent direction..the bird had circled -perhaps through an open area it is comfortable with- in order to approach from downwind of the call..any of you ever notice that?
