The bear question brought up another one in my mind... Do ya'll ever see snakes in the spring gobbler woods? Knock On Wood.. I have yet to see one while spring gobbler hunting. I have seen them while bowhunting, trout fishing, small mouth fishing, etc... but never while turkey hunting. I thought for sure I would see one last year in the rocky dry creekbed moutains we were hunting but I quess we were lucky. |

A hunting buddy of ours took his girlfriend with him one morning. And you guessed it, she sat down right beside of a snake. She wasn't really sure what is was because it started slithering away before it got really light enough to identify it. But, I have been fortunate enough not to take a seat next to one. |

Just black snakes. I usually do not see copperheads or rattlers in the woods until late June. |

I had a buddy sit down against a big oak tree a few years ago to work a gobbling bird. He felt something moving under his rump. He stood up and low and behold he was sitting on a huge timber rattlesnake!! I honestly think he didn't go turkey hunting as much after that incident! Really spooked him. |

In the past few years I have not seen one alive turkey hunting. However last spring just up the road from the lease a log truck ran over a rattler that was as big around as my arm and over 4 ft long. IT WAS HUGE. I have an old friend that almost sat on one and to this day he carries snake off with him hunting and sprinkles it around his tree. |

I am not sure if I can believe this really happened(as it goes agst all my snake theories on when snakes become active in the spring) but a good friend 's grouse dog was bitten by a copperhead LAST week...next to a rock pile in a very sunny south facing slope..dog was treated quickly and is fine...hmmmm. |

I just found this forum and hunt Rappahannock County. Last year was my first day turkey hunting ever I did run across a small copperhead. Luckily I was just hiking at that point and not sitting. I've always thought snakes were pretty cool so I was alot more interested in him than he was in me. |
