I'm from Prince William county and would like to try turkey hunting. I saw alot of different books at the library. Who's a good author to look for? How do you get started? |

"Tenth Legion" by Tom Kelly won't give many how to hints, but is great to help you understand the sport and passion of turkey hunting. It is a must read in my opinion for turkey hunters. "In the Turkey Woods" by Jerome Robinson is a good all around turkey knowledge and hunting book. |

Join the NWTF and you will get Turkey Call magazine that will have loads of helpful tips in it. Go to your local Wal-Mart and get some videos or watch TNN. If there is one thing I have learned it is the birds never do what you think they should do! They do what they want! |

Whatever ya do, don't go out and buy a call and run out in the woods and start stompin around calling every 10 seconds. If you do go out, DONT GO TOWARDS A GOBBLIN BIRD AND TRY TO STALK IT!. First, you might get shot, and second it plain ruins the hunt for the fella that is workin that bird. Try and find a mentor. Joining the NWTF is a good way to hook up with people. Finally, after you read and watch until at a fever pitch, scout, scout, and scout some more. |

For $25.00, the NWTF will send you a bi-monthly magazine called the Turkey Call which has some outstanding articles. You will also get a nice hat, video and quartley magazine called the The Caller. All of this nice stuff would cost way more than $25.00 if you were to just buy it. Not to mention that the NWTF uses your money to help the wild turkey. Plus you get to meet great people who will be more than glad to help you get started. Check with TNN but I think the NWTF show Turkey Call comes on Saturdays at 11:30. (i always set my vcr and tape all of the shows so i'm not certain of the exact time) Also check out the magazine Turkey & Turkey Hunting at your local wally world or store. A yearly subscription runs about $13.00 a year if you catch it on a special and it has a lot of helpful info. Scott

Read Turkey&Turkey Hunting magazine, Watch as many videos as you can, and do not be afraid to ask questions, no matter how dumb you might think they are. If you are like me you will learn most of your lessons from mistakes! |
