This is for your information, and I have no financial interest in any of the following. I have been asking a lot of questions of Randy Lewis, the machinist, "amateur" gunsmith and Tennessee boy who recently won all of the still target NWTF shooting competitions and broke all the world records for most pellets in a 3 in circle/40 yds. He not only broke the records, he destroyed them. If I understand it correctly he put about 40 pellets in a three inch circle and the patterns he is getting are about 96% in a 24 in circle/40 yds. Randy has some interesting barrel and choke approaches and obviously they work. He has developed some barrel modifications that slow down the wads(which he thinks avoids pattern distortion that accompanies normal "wad roll" in a conventinal tube), and is making custom tubes for lead and hevi-shot. He won the compettiton s with hevi-shot. His girl friend "borrowed" his gun and won the women's events while she was there. Randy has developed some chamber modifications that he thinks improve his patterns by 20%; and he thinks the wad -stopping modifications also significantly effect the patterns. He does not have access to a computer to answer questions but if you have any I will try to pass them on to him, and post responses. He does not have any affiliations with shell or gun manufacturers, he says, so I feel like I am getting straight honest answers

GN, What exactly did he do to his barrel? What does his tubes cost? Also, I never got a straight answer on Hevishot, does it harm your barrel or choke?

Randy is a macinist. He put in some modifications at the chamber, he roughened(modified it in a certain place) the barrel to stop the wad to avoid downrange wad roll and pattern distortion, and some other barrel end stuff...I think he charges about 100 to take your barrel and "tune" it...he says the modicfications make a pretty drammatic improvement in lead too...he says if the barrel is "tuned" correctly hevi-shot will not deforem the tubes, and that he thinks the only issues with defromation may come from a super super tight contriction ...ie, if you use a more open tube , say improved cyl type, you will still get a great downrange pattern and have no apparent tube damage..i have been using hte stuff a little during duck season , shootng through an improved cyl that I use for steel shot, and it appears to have a great pattern a long way out there, and what I have been using is 2 3/4 in , 1 1/8 oz loads a friend gave me to try. they are all you need. ...I have not shot enough paper to give percentages, but the ducks do not like it.
