I know it is not uncommon to see turkeys when fishing SML but last week was really something. I was heading down the Roanoke River arm hunting stripers when right on the shoreline at the spot known as the tennis courts I saw 13 longbeards getting a drink. Up behind them were 20 more! It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. I stopped the boat and got the camera. They never spooked. Watched them for a good five minutes sitting not more than 50 yds from them. Oh yeah, caught a few nice fish too. Great day.

Hey Big Bird, We just got a place on Palmers Marina in Penhook. Me and my dad are wanting to get back in the stripers this year. Any help with some guides? Maybe you would want to trade some fishing for some turkey hunting in Bland and Tazewell county. Just a thought.Later

Hello sixshot, Congrats on the new place. Its just in time for the action. The stripers are feeding pretty well above Hales Ford Bridge at marker 31 and 52. They are still thick in Hardy but there is so much bait up there that bites are few and far between. Night fishing is still good with Little Mac's and thundersticks. During the day, bait is the most consistent, but bucktails will wear them out if the conditions are right(like yesterday). As far as guides go, Dale Wilson is the best in my humble opinion. I imagine he is pretty booked as are most of the guides this time of year but it wouldn't hurt to try. I would love to swap a fishing trip for a hunt. Send me an email and we can discuss. Stripers are on fire on Smith Mountain. Double digit days are the norm right now with fish up to 20 lbs. I heard that Dale Wilson does have a few openings. He says this is the best January he can remember! Give him a call 297-5650.

Sixshot,

With all the ramps closed, any day is pretty good. I kind of watch the weather and decide. Stripers seem to really turn on right before a front slips in from the SW. Looks like another one is coming the middle of next week. That could be good. Have fun with Dale and hopefully we can get out soon!
