I saw in a catalogue that B-Square had shotgun scopes(not mounts fro scopes, but actaul scopes attached to a mount, sort of a one piece solution to the scope and mount)...anybody ever used one of these scopes for turkeys? Good? Bad? Ugly? thanks

I'm not really 100% sure that the scope is a B-Square Scope.. doesn't have a name on it that I can find

but I bought a combo scope and b-square mounts from Cabelas for my 11-87, it was all camo including the rings, which I thought was pretty cool and the reason I bought the combo

It came premounted.. the first shot I shot it left me a good cut on my nose because it was set back too far on the mount.. I moved it up a couple of notches but the problem was the rings didn't set high enough and the scope actually touched the mount.. I lined it in anyway and killed two birds in TX with it.. then because of the low rings and not getting it secure enough it twisted on me.. so I took it off and hunted a few days without the scope, never fired a shot.. then went and bought some new rings that set higher and remounted and sighted it back in and killed another bird with it.. I also missed a bird, but it wasn't the scopes fault

I was happy with the scope after I got it the way I wanted, but if this is the same setup you are referring to the rings that come with it are crap and you need to buy some that set the scope up higher so you can move it forward or else you will do what I did and have a bloody nose..

I bought 1 inch, Medium height Weaver Style rings.. Made by Millet.. Here is a link of some Weaver style rings and the Millets are on this page..

http://www.scopesnmore.com/mounts/weaver_rings.htm

The BSquare Mount is a good mount, durable and so far it hasn't moved any.. and the scope I have is OK, nothing secial about it though just a 2X scope painted camo..

You may find it cheaper to buy the Bsquare Mount, then buy the rings and a scope of your choice.. If I had it to do over I probably would and get a nice scope with a Turkey Reticle in it..May still do that I don't know :-)

mine were medium weaver style 1 inch rings also,im not sure who made them ,i got them from a friend of my dad who has a lot of military mounts for military weapons ,mine were a dull parkerized finish.also after years of looking down the barrle of a shotgun then putting a scope on it you may be more comfortable if you add a comb kit to your stock to raise your head and cheek up a little

gn,so as not to confuse you if you use a scope you should change the rings,if you go with a red dot sight such as a BSA,or SIMMONS ones with the big tube you have to use the rings that come with the sight.if you look at a cabellas catalog you will see what im talking about.i finally settled on the red dot sight because it has no magnafication,i may have a set or two of rings i could send you.

Diablo and Freddy sort of coached me up on the scopes and red dots last year, and I put a red dot on the 10 guage at the end of the season...I probabl y need to shoot somebody's shotgun scope a few times to get the feel for what a scope , set-up properly , is like..not being a rifle shooter I have no scope experience...probaly smart to do that beofre i buy al l the stuff.... have some friend s here who have them SO I think I should give that a try, but thanks for the insights.

thats a good idea gn,shoot one first to see how you like it,you may not like it.its better to find that out now rather than after you bought everything.good luck and dont let the scope kiss your forehead.

I think someone told me one time there was a scope in a pine thicket in AL? Maybe you could find that one? :-)

I've eaten alot of crow since you provide that Haydel Crow call last year. This turkey season, all I could manage to call up was crows. They just don't taste the same, even with cream of mushroom soup over them!

Dale..what can I say? It says Crow call on the side of it , right? If it calls crows that good you know something else wll answer it to..

Not complaining, GN. Had plenty of turkeys give away their location thanks to the Haydel. If only the turkeys had responded to my turkey calls like the crows responded to the crow call, well, this past season would have been different. Like you said, the Haydel is the best crow call I've ever blown.

GN,

I used a scope for the first time this year on my 870 Super Mag. I only shot at one bird this year, but it sure centered the load up on his head real good! I will say that I noticed more consistency in my shooting when I went to the range for patterning sessions this year after going to the scope.

My setup consist of the B-square mount and a 1.5 -4X, 32mm Bushnel scope with a cirlce recticle. I use the rings that came with my B-square mount. I didn't have the problems with eye relief or scope height that some of the other posters have described. If needed, I can peek under the mount and use the bead sights on the barrel if I really wanted.

I know that many would recommend putting a comb raising kit on the stock to get your eye more naturally aligned with the scope for more precise shooting. For me, I seem to be able to put the pattern right on target everytime without the comb raising kit, AND the underside of my cheekbone doesn't take a whallpping any more when I go to the range.

Overall, I'm pleased with my B-square mount and scope combo. I only wish I had tried it earlier on.

Later,

ODT

GN.... I cant say enough good things about the leupold 2.5x compact with Turkey slayer Rect.... I swaped out my tasco bantam for one this yr & I LOVE it..... as has been said here already watch out for the "kit"'s to make a gun a ready made bird buster...one size don't fit all.. not even most.

GN I also have a B square mount with a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4.5 variable scope on a 870. The scope has a 73 foot field of view at 100 yards when set on 1.75 power. This makes it easey to pick up the bird even if he is very close. I think this is most important as you can't shoot what you can't pick up in scope. This rig works great on standing or walking birds and I have even been able to pick up a couple of flying birds in the Va. fall season although I missed both as the magnification messes up your lead. One other advantage of a scope is if you wear glasses you can adjust the focus to make it very clear without your glasses which I did for several years. No one else can see with it but it is sharp to your eye. The bird and crosshairs are all on the same plane which is a big help for old eyes. I believe it is the best for shooting once you get used to it . The drawbacks are the gun is a little more cumberson to handle and it adds a little weight to gun. This is a consideration for me as I hunt S.C., N.C., and Va. every year. All public land in S.C. and Va. which means lots of walking to get away from other hunters. I would be happy for you to see or shoot this setup. I live in central N.C.. Also I go to the West Jefferson area several times a year if it would be close to you. In reading over the post it seems I was saying your eyes were old but I mean mine. Hope this helps.

thanks for the offer Ed...I have a friend here who has a similar setup to yours. SOunds like it is prett y important to be correct in mounting the scope in a manner that does not bloody you up when you shoot. AM I correct he scope can be adjusted to fit your individal eyesight? I wear contacts when I hunt turkeys and that may be part of my issue with the open sights I ahve been using...ican see close up without glaesses orcontacts, but not far away. When Icorrect them Icannot see cloese up as well, so that is the issue that is casuing me to miss i think. I can try the cope and go from there ..thanks

With a scope you will be able to adjust the focus for sharp clear vision without your contacts. The target and reticule are sharp and appear on the same plane which makes it fast and easey to aim. Let me stress again the need for a wide field of view to be able to pick up the bird that is close to you. A scope will probably stop your misses. I have killed 25 plus with one and other than two flying and one running I don't remember a miss. That being said I have not used it the last few years as I got a Winchester Super-X 2 auto that had fiber optic sights already on it and I now wear my glasses all the time. I love this gun as it is light to carry and does not kick bad at all. In fact my twelve year old grandson killed a nice bird I called in for him this spring with it. I have killed 18 with it the last thre years but I did miss one this spring that circled and got very close less than 20 yards. I have missed more over the years from too close than from too far.

Ed, that is the exact reason that I did go to a scope this year, not to shoot them farther but because I missed a bird at 15 steps last year .. didn't have my cheek on the stock and blew the wad right over top his head.. and didn't want that to happen again.. it paid off I think because I jelly-headed one at 20 steps this year with the same gun ..
