My roomate and I headed out this morning. When we arrived, it was about 5:45 and still real dark. We walked a few ridges over and listened from a high peak. WAY, WAY off in the distance we heard a faint gobble or two. Since we heard nothing else, we slowly began to make the long trip towards the bird. I was a little discouraged that he was only gobbling a little on his own, and he would not even respond to my owl or crow call. At about 6:30, we decided that we had reached a good high ridge that the bird could hopefully hear my calling from. We set up, me behind calling, and my roomate in front of me. I called, but heard nothing. We sat for a while, and i accidently dozed off. About 15 minutes later, my roomate wakes me up calling my name, saying that the bird had gobbled and had gotten closer. I again began to call, but no response. I got desperate, so I tried to imitate a fight with the fighting purr. He immediately gobbled, and was closing in. I then decided to shut up and see what he was going to do. After about 20 minutes of silence, I did a yelp, and the bird gobbled no more than 40 yards away, but we couldnt see him because he was over the lip of the ridge. For the next 30 minutes, he made a semi-circle around us, staying just over the lip, and gobbling his head off at some crows. We could hear him walking the whole time, and he was spitting a drumming like crazy. Finally, he had walked to our far right, and suddenly I see his fan. My roomate did not have an angle on him, so I dropped him at 19 steps. 19 pounds, 10 inch beard, and 7/8 inch spurs. It was a perfect morning. Good luck to all. Thanks Fullback.
