...to call in (to 30 yards or less) a mature gobbler that you've hunted for a few years...would you rather:
(A) shoot him dead at the first opportunity

or

(B) shoot him on video and let him walk

A co-worker and I were having this very discussion this morning. Thought it might be a good one to throw out here for everyone to think about.
Have a great day...the REAL SEASON is almost upon us.

(C) Shoot him dead after admiring him for a few moments, if the opportunity presents itself. If not (A)...

I'm a turkey hunter, not a turkey videographer... :-)

I'm with Freddy on this one.

I really like Denny Gulva's videos, but I'm not Denny :-) I like to carry my birds out on my shoulder not in a video camera.

If its a grudge match ,as you said, he goes down atthe first chance.....BY THIS POINT, have probably already seen too much of him on previous trips.

I would honestly say I am not sure...... I LOVE to watch them do thier thing...... If I had him in the open at 30yds I had him dead to rights reguardless if he dies or not I have won the battle thus the war is over.... But I would still love to jellyhead him too...... If I had a buddie with me there is no question he would have first shot.

Knock 'em dead or don't carry the gun

A for sure. I do like C though Freddy. The reason is that he has already won several battles, time for you to win. Now on the other hand if you have killed one or two, it is nice to let a friend shoot him, then maybe B. Someone give Max a lie detector test...LOL

If I've been after one for a while then A, shoot, flip him over and admire those long spurs. If you don't shoot him you may never be sure its your nemisis. Most gobblers I let strut and gobble a bit if I have them dead to rights though.

This post got me to thinking what would happen if BOB were the bird in question. I believe I know the answer! Personally, I honestly think either option is ok. Although, video tape doesn't go very well with mashed potatoes and gravy.

good point dale.
actually from my perspective i would probably regret my decision (at least a little bit) regardless of what i chose. and in all honesty it would probably depend on my mindset at the time. for instance if i've had my butt whipped all season and i finally beat BOB at his own game, i shoot him in the face...and i guarantee you i will miss him on days afield after that. by the same token if i've been blessed with a fulfilling season up to that point and i let him walk...i'll regret that decision too. knowing that that was probably the only opportunity to prevent fim from further screwing up the gene pool. all i know is i hope that my son, freddy, chris, eric or i have a crack at him this year.
listen close...hear that click...it was the safety being pushed off....there he is....easy now...easy...just squeeze.................

I tend to hold a grudge to much when it comes to birds. For the last several years it's been my goal to stop getting so personal with a single bird. I'm a miserable failure! Yet, I know once the chess game has played out, I'll in a small way regret to move on to a new game. Hoping we all have many matches to come!

i think a video or a clean kill would be about equal in satisfaction. the clean kill would honestly hold a little more satisfaction for me personally. "bird dog" or others, what do you mean by "long spurs" ? alot of people where i am, tell of long spurs and they are almost 7/8ths inch long ! i am in southern part of area. i wonder about different areas having bigger spurs than others...

Close the deal (A). Video camera going on the youth hunt, though.

I would shoot him dead. No contest! I love seeing them, and calling them in is the game. But the only way to know you finished it is to actually finish it. We all know that even at 30 yards a bird can find some amazing ways to remain among the living.

No doubt in My mind I pick "A" I am still trying to get my first VA Bird. SO I will admire the pictures afterwards.

A. is my final answer. Especially if it's a bird that I've hunted long enough to name. However, if I could shoot em dead, admire them, take a few pictures, and then breathe life back into them so we could match wits another day, I would certainly do it.
