Some days bad luck never ends. Well i started off at 5:00 heading to my spot that i've hunting for 10 years. I pack my climber & gear in and get it set on the tree. Well i scury up the tree in the dark and just as i'm happy with everything i make out a limb close by. So i turn on my light and what do i see, I'm completly blocked in by brush. i couldn't shoot any where. Where did the brush come from? it's all ways been clear in this area. so i climb down to under all the limbs but my climber is tilled to far up so i have to go to the bottom and adjust it. well i finally get setting in, it's day light.

I sit there till 10:30 with out seeing anything. so I call dad on the radio and tell him i'm coming down at 11. I just put the radio in my pocket when i here a twig snap to my left and it's a deer 40 yards out moving my way. i get ready and see another deer orange in color to the right of it. Then i see antler. LOTS OF ANTLER! this deer is 20 yards away in brush smelling the air. Well the first deer comes up to me and feeds under my stand. it's a little 2" spike with velvet still on. Finally the big one works my way a little. He's a big 8pt and he's only 8 yards away looking my direction. after 20 minutes of this, the spike moves back to the big one, well the 8 decides something isn't right and turns to leave, so i come to full draw. Had one limb to contend with so i moved down and the spike seen me and spooked. The 8 ran about to about 25 yards behind a big tree. I waited till he come out from behind it giving a quarting away shot and let the arrow fly. He dropped to the ground as the arrow went right over his back and ran for the other side of the county.

So my first day of 2003 season ends with a miss of the biggest buck of my life. This makes 3 8pt. bucks in 2 years that i've not shot at close range (under 10 yards) because of the poor shot opertunites. Most people tell me to go ahead and shot at them with a staight on shot, but i'm a broadside or quartering away hunter. I think i owe it to the animal to place the best shot possible.

hmmmmm that is a bummer. But be happy you have seen that many bucks... I have never been in my tree stand and seen any buck bigger than a spike. I know people that have hunted for about 10 years and have never shot a deer. You would think you would get lucky atleast once ya know?

I hunt on base so my rules are different... bow and shotgun open up same day. But I hunted friday morning and night and saturday morning and night. I saw 1 deer both days... and that 1 was one of them luck sightings where you just see the deers head cut through the brush.
