hello i hope everybody haveing a good summer. i saw a neil cost matchgrade box call for sale.the guy was asking 2500 dollars for it . i called the man . he said he`s called in a few birds with it .he said he collected sevaral diff kinds. he also said he meet a student of neil cost who did good work .he wasn`t very talkative about his other calls . well i got to thinking. i bought a doug camp box call best box i ever heard and used the cost 29.99. what do you`all think is too much to pay for a call.and if you bought a collector call would you use it in the field. thanks john

I don't think there is too much to pay. If you have the money and you want the call. Any type of collectable item is going to bring what people are willing to pay for it. Mr. Cost's "Fat Lady" call went for over $11,000 which was his last call. I don't ever see myself buying any call that would go over $200 but you never know. Would I use a collector call? Depends. I have a beautiful longbox by Ronnie Clough that I plan on taking out at least a couple times, granted it cost no where near $2500 :-)

In the whatever it is worth category, I usually have two box calls in my vest every day that are "co;llectyor's calls" and are now worth $800 for one(according to ebay) and a lot more than that for the other o ne. The 8oo one is one of Lamar Williams calls(the Neil Cost student you described)...I bought them from the makers a long time ago when they did not know they were famous, and they have been a part of a lot of great hunting memories for me. I could stand it if I lost one or broke it as I hve resigned myself to the fact that it could happen anytme. I also had "Call#1" fro manother pretty goodcallmaker ..I bought it from him when he decided he was fgoing to start selling hiscalls and it is literally the first one he ever made...I gave it back to him a few years ago when his son started hunting , so he could have it...be interesting to see what that was worth same day.

I have few collector calls, I have some Neil Cost, Steve Mann, and a order in with Lamar Williams for some of his calls. I think that maybe 2500.00 is a little high for the Cost call.
But they are good investments. I also have some of them turtlebob calls signed in person by ole spider creek slim himself. God rest his soul.

I dont' know if anyone here has been following the Homeless Joe/L.F. Cox vs. Dick Kirby debate on ebay or the nwtf but here's a call for ya'...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3622746132&category=36255&rd=1

I was the first bidder and quit soon after when it topped $50 It's now over $800. For those who havn't followed the whole "MESS" it seems Mr. Kirby has copyrighted the word Boat Paddle call in 1989 and several "Boat Paddle" calls were removed from ebay because of this.......

You learn something new every day? :-)

Frankly, all this makes me dislike even more the whole commercialization of the world that has now surrounded this grand game bird...life used to be simple.

I agree GN. Everyone wants a piece of it.

It still amazes me he has the copyright. Look at all the "old" custom call makers that made a boat paddle not to mention all the "new" ones????
